Homestay in Otsu?

Have you ever experienced this exhilarating moment of meeting amazing people? Edward and I just had such an opportunity at our home in Otsu, Shiga. In September, three teachers from Burkina Faso came to Japan for education-and-culture exchanges through my friend’s project called B-JAPE (Burkinafaso Japon Apprendre Ensemble). They visited elementary schools and other facilities in several prefectures and while they were in Otsu, we were their hostfamily 🙂

素晴らしい人と出会って、思いっきり元気をもらう。そんな経験ありませんか？
２０２３年９月。友人のプロジェクトB-JAPEを通して、西アフリカのブルキナファソという国から３人の先生が来日されました。ブルキナと日本間の教育＆文化交流を目的とした自主研修プロジェクトで、先生方３人は日本の各地を訪問。エドワードと私は、滋賀県大津市滞在中のホストファミリーとして、このプロジェクトに関わらせて頂いたのですが、陽気で聡明なブルキナファソの先生たちとの出会いがまさにそんなワクワクの塊でした。

Where is Burkina Faso?

Burkina Faso is a country in West Africa, bordered by Mali to the northwest and Ghana to the south. Its official language is French. So while Burkinabès stayed at our house, we communicated mostfly in French, and some English. Unfortunately my French is still not very good so I could not understand everything. In Burkina Faso, there are also 60 indigenous languages officially recognized by the government. This means children learn to communicate with family members in their native tongues first. Then after starting school, they learn school subjects in French.

ブルキナファソは、西アフリカにある国で、北はマリ、南はガーナと国境を接する内陸国。公用語はフランス語なので、我が家に滞在中は、フランス語で主に交流し、時々英語を使いました。残念ながら、私のフランス語がまだ未熟なので、みんながワイワイ楽しそうに話している内容を全て理解することはもちろん出来ず、とってももどかしかったです。ブルキナファソでは、フランス語の他にも政府によって公式に認められている先住民族の言語が60語ほどあるので、子供たちはまず家族の言語を話し、学校に通うことができれば、全ての授業をフランス語で受けるようです。

Become a Hostfamily?

What was so special about being a hostfamily for Burkinabès in Japan? The answer is very simple. We could become a family by getting to know each other at home. Let me explain. I define “Family” as a group of people who feel close after learning about each other by sharing daily-home-activities. We welcomed three Burkinabès into our home for a week and spent a wonderful time together, eating home-cooked meals, washing the dishes, doing the laundry, playing a game of Mancala/Wari, and dancing to Burkinabè music.

日本でブルキナの先生たちのホストファミリーになるというのは、特別な経験ですよね。では、どう特別なのでしょう？答えは、とてもシンプル。今まで全く知らなかった国の人たちと、家事を通してお互いを知ることで家族になれるということが特別なのです。では、「家族」とはなにか？私なりの考え方ですが、「家族」というのは、日々の生活を共にするうちに心から近い存在だと感じる人たちのことを言うのだと思うのです。一週間という短い期間でしたが、ブルキナの先生３名を我が家にお迎えし、とても素晴らしい時間を過ごさせて頂きました。家庭料理を一緒に食べ、毎食後、手際よく食器を洗ってくださり（私は後ろで食器を拭く役）、洗濯は風呂場で時間を掛けて手洗い（洗濯機も後ほど使用し、 “C’est plus facile!!” と喜んでいました）、マンカラ（ブルキナではワリと呼ぶらしい）で遊び、ブルキナの音楽で踊ったり。

Eat, Play, Laugh

I have always wanted to go to Africa since I was a child. But I haven’t been able to do that and I had even forgotten about my desire to do so. Then I met Yoko (B-JAPE). Thanks to her passion and powerful will to make this project come true, Edward and I could experience “Africa” in our living room. We could briefly see and understand Burkina Faso lifestyle, their ways of looking at the world and their joyful attitudes toward communication. Burkinabè teachers joked, talked, and laughed a lot and that gave me so much energy. I felt genuinely happy being around them. Also we ate Japanese food with our hands, in Burkina Faso style. Much to my joy, they gave me a fun nickname, Master Chef!!! They also called each other with Japanese nicknames: Katakoto-san, Mitarai-san, Kuchisamishii-san. Super fun!

子どもの頃からアフリカに行きたいと思っていた私ですが、最近まですっかりその夢を忘れてしまっていたんです。そんなある日、B-JAPE代表YOKOと出会いました。彼女の情熱と行動力でB-JAPEのプロジェクトが形となった2023年、エドワードと私は、自宅のリビングでアフリカを体験することが叶いました。ブルキナの生活スタイルや三人の教育や物事に対峙する姿勢を垣間見ることができました。そしてなにより私が一番感動したのは、ブルキナの先生３人の人との関わり方です。兎に角楽しそう！ジョークが常に飛び交い、いっぱいしゃべって、大爆笑。３人と一緒にいると、元気をいっぱいもらえて、心の底からHappyになります。滞在中、日本食をリラックスして食べて頂きたかったので、ワンプレートに日本食を盛り付け、ブルキナスタイルで手で食べるのを楽しんだのですが、喜んでいただけたようで、マスターシェフというあだ名をつけてもらいました(^^)/　３人の間でも日本語のあだ名を付け合い、片言さん、御手洗さん、 口寂しいさん、とあだ名で気軽に呼び合うのもとても面白かったです。

Nous avons passé un excellent moment avec vous tous. Merci pour cette merveilleuse expérience. Vous nous manquez. Il y a tant de choses dont je voulais parler avec vous pendant que vous étiez ici, mais je n’ai pas pu le faire à cause de mes faibles compétences en français. J’aimerais partager réflexions sur la culture japonaise et en apprendre davantage sur votre pays, votre culture, vos langues, etc. J’espère améliorer mon français !

We had an excellent time with you all. Thank you for the wonderful experience. We miss you all. There are so many things I wanted to talk about with you while you were here, but I couldn’t because of my poor French skills. I’d like to share my thoughts on Japanese culture and learn more about your country, culture, languages and so on. I hope to improve my French!
