Communication

I have discussed Active Vocabulary (the words that we use) and Passive Vocabulary (the words that we understand but don’t use) in my previous blog post Powerful Verb “Take” 英会話で使える動詞1.
If we want to have more Active Vocabulary, what shall we do?
Read books? Listen to Podcasts? Keep a diary in English? Watch dramas and movies?
Everybody enjoys English differently so any methods you like are great. HOWEVER, it is important to keep this in mind: We can improve our Active Vocabulary when we use the language for COMMUNICATION! Yes, we need to USE it to tell and listen to stories, ask and answer questions and make ourselves understood.

discuss (v.) 話題として取り上げる
active (adv.) 自発的な
passive (adj.) 受動的な
previous (adj.) 前の
differently (adv.) それぞれに
method (n.) 方法
keep in mind ~を心に留めておく
communication (n.) 伝える・伝わること
make oneself understood 自分を理解してもらう

I got excited at Japan Brickfest in Kobe!

Do you want to communicate well?

Yes! Yes!! Yes!!!
I want to be heard.
I want to be undersood.
I want to share my ideas.
I want to listen to other people’s ideas.
I want to learn more about people, cultures, and the world we live in.
Then let’s look at a handful of powerful verbs that we use every single day and improve our communication skills!
be heard しっかりと聴いてもらう
be understood しっかりと理解してもらう
share (v.) 共有する
listen to (v.) ~を聴く
learn about (v.) ~について学ぶ

Get  {verb} (get, got, gotten)

According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (Oxford University Press 2005), the verb GET can be used in about 21 different situations. This means that we can say many things by using GET only!
Here are some examples:
1. BRING

Q: Would you go and get my sister from the station?
A: Sure! What time?

2. BUY

Q: Which newspaper do you get?
A: Well, I get the Japan News.

3. MARK/GRADE

Q: What did you get in Math?
A: I got a ‘C+’ in Math but a ‘A-‘ in English!

4. ILLNESS

Q: Why isn’t he here tonight?
A: He gets bad headaches in the evening so he went home.

5. STATE/CONDITION

Q: What is she doing upstairs?
A: She got bored so she started reading comic books.

6. START

Q: Can you stay and play one more game?
A: Sorry, we need to get going soon.

There are 15 more situations where we can use GET! It is really fun!
If you are interested in learning more about this, please let us know. We will show you how to use them in YOUR LIFE.

I really get bored easily, but thanks to my wonderful teacher’s lessons and Smith’s teachers’ fun blogs I continue to enjoy learning English.

    • Hello Yumiko!
Thanks to your positive comment on my previous blog “Powerful Verb TAKE,” I got to write this sequel with so much enthusiasm. As you know, getting used to using English in life requires lots of practice. So I hope this type of blog that focuses on one verb would help English learners overcome some fear and feel like using it 🙂

      • Thank you for your reply,Chiharu, I always get fun and enthusiasm to learn English from your blogs!
I think a blog that focuses on one verb gives us the confidence to speak English.
I’m also looking forward to your next blog 😊
