Vocabulary (= all the words that a person knows or uses)
All language learners have to learn new words and practice using them in daily communication. While practicing, we make lots of mistakes. And we wonder how long this is going to take. We might say, “Ahhh maybe I can’t memorize them all.” I got frustrated from time to time, too. After many years of training, I found out that verbs are the key BUT not just any verbs. There are two types of vocabulary we build: 1. Active Vocabulary (the words that we use) and 2. Passive Vocabulary (the words that we understand but don’t use). We want ACTIVE VOCABULARY!
learn (v.) 学ぶ
practice (v.) 練習する
daily (adj.) 日々の
while (conj.) ~している間に
wonder (v.) ~だろうかと思う
maybe (adv.) たぶん
memorize (v.) 暗記する
frustrated (adj.) いらいらした
Active Vocabulary (= the words that we use)
Do you want to speak English fluently? Then let’s focus on what we say to our friends and family daily. Any English conversations almost always have a sentence with this set [a subject (I, He, She, It, We, They) + a verb.] For example, “He eats breakfast at home, doesn’t he?” And there are only a handful of verbs that we use in a variety of situations every single day. Even if we learnt only one of these useful verbs, we could talk with anybody anywhere! Isn’t that amazing?
Today, let’s look at a verb TAKE.
fluently (adv.) 流暢に
then (adv.) それなら
almost always ほとんどいつも
sentence (n.) 文
following (adj.) 次に述べる
subject (n.) 主語
verb (v.) 動詞
a handful of わずか
a variety of いろいろの
useful (adj.) 役に立つ
amazing (adj.) すごい
Take {verb} (take, took, taken)
According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (Oxford University Press 2005), the verb TAKE can be used in about 30 different situations. This means that we can say many things by using TAKE only!
Here are some examples:
1. CARRY/LEAD
Q: Could you take this bag to your grandmother?
A: Sure! What’s in it?
2. REACH and HOLD
Q: Would you take this bag (=hold) for a minute?
A: Ok. Wow! it’s heavy!
3. REMOVE
Q: Should I take down this poster?
A: Yes, please. That event is finished.
4. TIME
Q: How long does it take to walk to Smith’s OTSU from JR Otsu station?
A: It takes only about 3 minutes.
There are 26 more situations where we can use TAKE! It is really fun!
If you are interested in learning more about this, please let us know. We will show you how to use them in YOUR LIFE 🙂
