Smith’s School of English Sagamihara is located just down the street from an excellent Sagamihara hairdresser called “Iwasaki.” As in the case of Smith’s School of English, Hair Salon Iwasaki is just 3 or 4 minutes from the shops at Sagamihara Station.

When I relocated my English school from Hashimoto to Sagamihara Chuo-ku 6 years ago, I created some new challenges for myself. Some of those challenges were huge, for example acquiring rooms big enough for English classes, making Smith’s School of English known in Sagamihara Chuo-ku, and building the English student population. Other challenges were small in comparison. Where to find a hairstylist near Sagamihara Station? Eventually I found this English-friendly hair salon-  “Iwasaki”.

Iwasaki is a large chain of hair salons located in Sagamihara and throughout Japan. In fact, there are many Iwasaki Hair Salons near Smith’s School of English! I always go to the one down the street, usually when I have time between my English classes. Why is Iwasaki so good?

Upon entering the hair salon, customers are required to register and take a number. The wait is not long because there are always 4 or 5 professional hair stylists working. At first I was a bit intimidated when I saw the touch screen check-in machine, but relieved to discover that I could do it in English. The questions it asks: “Is this your first time here, what service do you want, do you prefer a special stylist?” I never have a preference because they are all very good.

I always make it a point to ask the stylist if she can speak English. They always giggle and say “no, a little,” etc. They have learned little bits of English from me, for example “2 centimeters, around the ears, on top, in back, and looks great thank you!”  Because I’ve been going to Iwasaki for so long, they know me, and know about my English school in Sagamihara.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about this hair salon/barber in Sagamihara is the price! They have a “service time” from 12:00-14:00 every day in which the cost of a haircut is only 690 yen! Outside of those hours the price is a mere 980 yen! Iwasaki Hair Salons' concept of excellent service at a cheap price is truly unbeatable.
