Smith’s School of English, Sagamihara: Coaching Communicative Confidence

Currently my youngest student here at Smith’s School of English Sagamihara is 12 years old, and my oldest is 70. Sometimes this poses a big challenge to me as a teacher for many reasons. There is a 16-year-old high school student that is more fluent than the 35-year-old that she studies with in class. A 30-year-old that is less fluent than a 60-year-old. As more students join my school it gets more challenging to manage. My top priority here is to instill confidence in speaking the English language, regardless of age.

In situations like this, I can often depend on Smith’s curriculum. The original curriculum was developed years ago. It is still in use in this school, especially with beginners and intermediate level students. They don’t know that I’m using our curriculum because it’s all “in my head.” No textbooks, no notes. Just a short presentation of the target language, and then maximum student-talk.

Adapting lessons in progress is exciting and fun for me. When I see a student struggling a bit, I’m able to make it a bit easier.  When I feel it is too easy for them, I boost the target language a bit, presenting something a little more difficult to practice. Experience matters in this job, and I can confidently say that nearly 100 percent of my low to high intermediate lessons are stored in my memory. It is a skill that we develop; one that allows us to react quickly and adjust on the spot.

Because student-talk-time is so important at Smith’s School of English, sometimes a student of (a bit) higher level becomes “the teacher” without even knowing it. Prompting “the student-teacher” becomes part of my job. He or she is doing a lot of talking and the others are responding; learning from that student. I keep my mouth shut as much as possible and do my job as a coach of communicative confidence. Satisfaction is very important to me, whether it be my own satisfaction or the students’ satisfaction.
