生徒様の自習

スミス英会話相模原校には様々な生徒様が通われています。学生の方から70代の方まで、ほとんどは日本人ですが、韓国出身や中国出身の方もいます。これは素晴らしいことです。そして英会話を学ぶ目的はそれぞれが違います。

今回は相模原校に通い始めて1年になる生徒様のユミコさんに、彼女のことを書かせてもらう許可をもらいました。彼女はマンツーマンコースで相模原校に通われていて、真剣に英語を学びながらも毎週楽しい英会話レッスンを行っています。私は楽しく学ぶ彼女のお手伝いができて嬉しいです。

ユミコさんは毎週日曜日に配信されるスミス英会話のウィークリーメールマガジンで届くワンポイントレッスンのコメント欄にいつも自分の例文を書いてくれます。自分の例文だけでなく、他の生徒様の例文や私のコメントを読んでワンポイントレッスンに対する質問を持ってクラスにやってきます。

ユミコさんはスミス英会話講師たちが書く英会話ブログも全て読んでいます。読んだブログには全てコメントをして他スクールの講師たちに興味を持っています。ワンポイントレッスンや講師のブログを開いた時に彼女のコメントがあるのを見られるのが嬉しいです。

ウィークリーメールマガジンや相模原校で学んだことを基にしたノートをまとめるのにも彼女は時間を費やしています。インターネットから、勉強したことに関連した画像を探して印刷し、新しく学んだことと一緒にノートに貼っています。彼女はこれを楽しんでやっていて、この独自の自習方法は彼女の勉強に役立つでしょう。

彼女のような生徒様のお手伝いを楽しめない講師などいるでしょうか？ユミコさんは英会話レッスンに来る度に私の一日を楽しくしてくれます。“完璧な”生徒様とは、彼女のような生徒様のことです。講師が生徒様をやる気にさせなければいけませんが、ユミコさんが私をやる気にさせてくれるということを彼女は知りません！彼女が英会話を学ぶ目的は何か？それは、彼女の娘さんがアメリカ人と結婚しているからです。ご主人の両親が日本に来たので、ユミコさんはアメリカを訪れる計画を立てています。彼女は英語を学ぶのが本当に好きなのでしょう。私は、この仕事ができて、ユミコさんのような生徒様を持てて幸せです。

Smith’s School of English Sagamihara has all kinds of students. The youngest is currently 16 years old; the oldest is 70. Most are Japanese, however I am also coaching someone from Korea and another from China. It’s wonderful. All of them have a unique purpose to study English conversation.

Yumiko has been with me for a year now, and has given me permission to write about her. She is a private student here, and really takes her study seriously, yet she has a lot of fun with it throughout every week. I love helping this woman, mainly because she enjoys learning.

Yumiko always responds to our weekly One-Point Lesson, which arrives every Sunday via Smith’s School of English Newsletter. Not only does she respond, but she reads other responses from students, reads my responses, and comes to class with questions for me about the One-Point.

Yumiko reads all of Smith’s School of English blogs. She comments on all of them and is curious about our other teachers throughout Japan. I love to see this when I look at the One-Point and fellow teachers’ blogs. She’s there.

She spends quite a bit of time every week adding to her English notebook-  all based on the Newsletter content and what we study in class here in Sagamihara. She finds images on the internet related to her study, prints them, pastes them to her notebook pages along with the new language learnt. She has fun doing this, and I know her unique method of study helps her to remember.

What English teacher in Japan would not enjoy helping a language learner like this? Yumiko makes my day every time she enters my classroom. If there ever was a “perfect student,” she is it. Teachers are supposed to motivate students to learn. What this special student doesn’t know is that she is motivating me! What is her purpose for studying English conversation? It’s a good purpose. Her daughter is married to an American, living in Japan. His parents have come to Japan, and she is planning a trip to the USA to visit them. I believe she really loves learning English. Me?  I’m lucky to have this job, and lucky to have Yumiko in my school.
