スミス英会話相模原校生徒様と講師の役割

スミス英会話相模原校は今でも成長を続けています。新たに入会される生徒様を迎え、私の英会話講師としての挑戦も増えています。私たち講師の目標は全ての生徒様が英会話に対する自信をつけることなので、できる限り気をつけています。生徒様には良い気分でクラスを終えてほしいのです！私の“英会話講師”としての役割は頻繁に変化しますが、それがこの仕事の好きな部分でもあります。

役割：レッスンプランナー

英会話レッスンを計画してそれを迎えるには考慮すべきことがたくさんあります。その英会話レッスンには生徒様が何名いるか？１名、２名または３名かもしれません。生徒様にとって初めてのレッスンではないか？生徒様の年齢層は？スミス英会話相模原校には学生の生徒様から70代の生徒様まで在籍されています。どれくらいスピーキングができるか？何に興味があるか？仕事は？彼らの興味や能力をどのように英会話レッスンに反映できるか？彼らは英語を学ぶ理由は何か？シャイ、社交的、慎重などの性格はどうか？…と、リストは続きます。

役割：プレゼンター

英会話レッスンのその日のポイントを説明する時間はいつも手短でシンプルにします、5分以内です。初級者のクラスでは“How often do you_? (どれくらい(頻度)_をしますか？)”というような質問、上級者のクラスでは“What are you looking forward to this year? (今年何を楽しみにしていますか？)”というようなオープンな質問から始めます。上級者のクラスでは多くの場合、毎週日曜日に生徒様（生徒様以外でも登録をしている方）へ送られるスミス英会話ウィークリーメールマガジンで届く内容を基に質問をします。

役割：クラスのマネージャー

1レッスン最大人数である3名で英会話レッスンをする時は、生徒様全員が話す時間を均等にするという課題が出てきます。“クラスのマネージャー”としての私の役割は毎レッスン変わります。英語を話すことが得意な方と不得意な方を把握することが重要です。私は頻繁に、話すことが得意な生徒様が不得意な生徒様を助けるように会話を促し、時には会話をリードしますが、間違いを直し過ぎないようにいつも気をつけています。精妙なバランスが必要です。

役割：講師

私たちの主な役割は生徒様の能力を引き出すコーチですが、時には英語を教えることもあります。これは、英語文法に関する質問を受けた時によく起こります。教える必要ができた時、私は役割を講師に変えます。例えを入れたり、ホワイトボードへ書いたりして短く、明確な説明をします。英会話を学ぶ生徒様は自らが話す必要があるので、できる限りシンプルな説明にして会話に戻ります。

役割：コーチ

これは重大な役割で、私たちが最も行うことです。クラスの中で会話が続く限り、そのままにします。私たちは生徒様にたくさんの情報を与えすぎずに会話をするよう促すことで、彼ら自身で考え、“講師”がいなくても言語を引き出すことができるようになります。英会話レッスンのスピードを遅く、速くするか見極めることも重要です。生徒様のペースで英会話を指導することが優先されます。スミス英会話相模原校では置いてきぼりになる生徒様はいません！

役割：生徒様にベストな決断をする

一度やったレッスンを繰り返すことは（何度でも）生徒様にも良いと思っていて、やり過ぎるということはありません。最近、とてもシャイな10代の学生の生徒様と自信があって社交的な30代の生徒様が同じグループレッスンになりました。私は学生の生徒様が過去に何度か経験のあるレッスンを選びました。30代の生徒様は学生の生徒様からたくさん学び、レッスンが半分を過ぎると笑顔が出て、笑い、そして会話も増えました！お互いに利益のあったレッスンになり、見ていてとても満足のいくものでした。

役割：記録をする

スクールには全ての生徒様のそれぞれのファイルがあり、レッスン内容、進み具合、課題ポイント、出席状況についての情報が記録されています。

役割：カウンセラー

時に、私はカウンセラーになります。通常マンツーマンレッスン内で、簡単な提案やアドバイスをします。英語を習う生徒様は十分に向上できていないと感じることや、なぜ勉強を続けるのかが分からなくなる、何らかの理由でモチベーションを失うことがあります。スミス英会話相模原校にはいくつも成功ストーリーがあり、彼らが目標を達成させて軌道に乗るのを見られることがどれだけ素晴らしいことか！

役割：共感者

全ての生徒様がそれぞれ特別です。私はどんな方法であっても彼らのお手伝いを楽しんで行っています。これには多くの共感とクラスで起こる事全てを認識しておくことが必要です。英会話の自信をつけるコーチとしての私の”役割”に常に反応して調節することも楽しんでいます。スミス英会話相模原校講師をすることは私の喜びです。

Smith’s Sagamihara English School Students and Roles of the Teacher

Smith’s Sagamihara English School student body continues to grow at a steady pace. As more students join, my challenges increase as an English conversation coach. Our goal here is to build English speaking confidence in every student, so I make it a point to be as careful as possible. I want them to leave my classroom feeling good! My roles as “a teacher” are constantly changing, and that is a part of this job that I really like.

Lesson Planner

There are many things to consider when planning and approaching a lesson. How many English students are scheduled for the class? It could be one, two, or three. Is it a student’s first lesson? What are their ages? Here in Sagamihara that could be anywhere between 14 and 70. What are their English speaking levels? What are their interests? What are their jobs? How can I tailor the English Lesson to their interests and abilities? What are their reasons for studying English? What kind of personality do they have? Are they shy? Outgoing? Intimidated?  And the list goes on…

Presenter

Presenting the lesson point is always brief and simple; taking less than 5 minutes. For the lower levels it could be something (on the whiteboard)  like “How often do you___?” For the higher levels, it might start with an open question, such as “What are you looking forward to this year?” Many of the higher level classes are based on the contents of the Smith’s School of English Mail Magazine, which our students (and anyone else that subscribes to) receive every Sunday.

Classroom Manager

A class of 3 English students poses the challenge of equal talk-time for everyone. My role as “classroom manager” changes with every class. Knowing who the stronger and weaker English speakers are really helps. I often use the stronger speakers to help the weaker ones, sometimes to actually lead the class, and am always careful not to over-correct mistakes. It’s a delicate balance.

Teacher

Although our main role is coaching, teaching happens from time to time. This occurs most often when I receive questions pertaining to English grammar. It happens, and when it does, my role changes quickly. A short, clear explanation is presented either through examples or on the whiteboard. English students need to talk, so I keep it as simple as possible and move on with conversation.

Coach

This is a huge role, and it is what we do best. As long as communication continues to happen within the classroom, we let it go. We prompt our English students without giving them too much information, which allows them to think for themselves and pull up the language without “a teacher.” Recognizing when to slow down or speed up a lesson is also important. Coaching English conversation at the students’ pace is a priority. No English student gets left behind in Sagamihara!

Decision Maker; What is best for the students?

If I feel that the students would benefit from repeating a lesson (even many times), it is never a problem. Recently I had a very shy 14-year-old Junior High School boy paired with a very confident and outgoing 35-year-old woman. I selected a lesson that he had done 3 or 4 times. The woman learned a lot from him, and half-way through the lesson she had him smiling, laughing, and talking more! It was a “win-win” situation and very satisfying to watch.

Record Keeper

Every student has a file that contains information regarding lessons, progress, weaknesses, attendance, etc.

Counselor

Sometimes I’m even a counselor. It usually occurs in a private lesson and entails giving some friendly suggestions or advice. English students sometimes feel like they haven’t improved much, or even don’t know why they continue to study; losing motivation for some reason or another. Smith’s School of English Sagamihara has had a few success stories in this area, and how nice it was to see people achieve their goals and get back on track!

Empathizer

Every English student is special in their own way. I really enjoy helping them in any way I can. Doing this requires a lot of empathy and remaining cognizant to everything that occurs within the classroom. Reacting and adjusting my roles as a coach of English communicative confidence is something that I really enjoy. It really is my pleasure here at Smith’s School of English, Sagamihara!
