Smith's School of English Free Trial Lessons

A potential student calls our head office to learn more about Smith's School of English courses. The staff answers their questions and offers a free trial lesson. After the lesson, it is up to the student to decide whether to join or not. There is no pressure from the staff or teacher.

I enjoy these lessons for a few reasons. Here’s the main reason-  It takes some courage for that student to come to my school for the first time. Many of them are nervous. I ask them a few basic questions in the beginning to get a quick idea of their level, to think about what kind of lesson is appropriate, and to help them relax a bit.

Then I select a lesson that (I think) is a bit below their maximum ability, and as they begin to relax and gain more confidence, I slowly pick up the pace and make it a little more difficult. When I come close to their limit, I pull it back down to their comfort zone. Now I know their level of speaking ability.

The best part of all this, for me as a teacher, is watching them go from being nervous to a higher level of confidence in just a short time. And leaving with a smile on their face! I also talk a little bit about that here. Many of them join my school on the spot, others call back later, and some don’t return for whatever reason. No pressure. When they do come back, they get a big “thank you” from me and a “let’s get started!” Helping them progress and improve their communicative confidence is my pleasure!
