スミス英会話相模原校の英会話レッスンは講師である私にとってもいつも楽しいです。時々スミス英会話相模原校でのレッスンは“英語レッスン”と表現するのが正しいのかと思うことがあります。スミス英会話相模原校では、主に初級者~中級者のクラスで“英語レッスン”をしています。“英語レッスン”自体の時間はとても短く、その日に取り上げる英語のポイントや機能について簡潔に紹介や実演説明をします。

例えば英語のポイントでは、“Do you think you will ___(in the future)? ((将来)___すると思う？)”そして機能では、“predicting future events (未来形予測)”等です。

この“英語レッスン”は最小限ですが、練習と生徒様主導のトーク時間は長く取っています。いつも楽しく、初級者上級者関係なくどのレッスンにも笑いが溢れています。

相模原校の英会話レッスンでは毎週おもしろい瞬間があります。そういった瞬間は生徒様が会話の中で創造的に努めた結果です。最近、生徒様の1人にダチョウの絵を見せました。生徒様は絵をじっと見つめていて、私は彼女がダチョウの英単語を知らないとわかりました。彼女は答えを考えていてトライしたいようだったので、充分な時間をあげました。そして彼女は笑顔で“fast bird! (速い鳥！)”と答えました。私たちは笑いが止まらなくなり、その後もレッスン中ずっと思い出し笑いをしていました。私は今でも笑えます。

English Lessons at Smith’s School of English Sagamihara: Funny Moments and Laughter

English lessons at Smith’s School of English Sagamihara are always a lot of fun for me as a teacher. Sometimes I wonder if the phrase “English lesson” is an accurate description of what happens here in Sagamihara. “English lessons” occur mostly within the lower to mid-level students at Smith’s Sagamihara. The “English lesson” itself is very short, consisting of a brief introduction and demonstration of a particular language point or function. An example of a language point might be “Do you think you will ______ (in the future?)” And a “function” of that could be “predicting future events.” The “English lesson” is minimal, but the practice and student “talk-time” is extensive. It’s always fun and there is laughter in almost every class, regardless of English student levels. 

Funny moments happen every week in my English conversation classes. Some of those moments are the result of my English students’ creative attempts in communication. Recently, I showed a picture of an ostrich to a student. She stared at it, and I knew she didn’t know the correct word. I gave her plenty of time as I saw her thinking and wanting to try. Then she smiled and said "fast bird!” Both of us couldn’t stop laughing, and we laughed on and off throughout the lesson. I’m still laughing at that one.

I once had a private English student that I understood was a fruit salesman. For the first 2 months or so I wondered why a fruit salesman would need English conversation lessons. When I finally found out the reason, both of us laughed uncontrollably. It was all due to a pronunciation problem. I still laugh about that moment to this day. My most memorable funny moment here in Sagamihara (so far) was simulating some sort of interview with a student that agreed to film it. This was all due to her personality and the questions that we created together. Mostly personality though. She is the funniest student that has ever joined this English school. The idea of the interview completely failed because neither of us could contain ourselves. We laughed so hard that we cried!  Every time that I look at this 15-second video I laugh. I’ll never forget that moment. I really appreciate this English student and the job that I have here in Sagamihara. I want to do this forever!
