私はレス、スミス英会話生駒校のオーナー講師です。1998年から生駒市で英語を教えてきました。今日は少し違う話をしたいと思います。なぜ、他の場所ではなく生駒で英語を学ぶのか、という話です。

生駒からなら、電車ですぐに大阪にも奈良市にも出られます。大きな英会話スクールに通おうと思えば、それもできる場所です。それでも、地元で学びたいという生徒様は多いんです。

正直なところ、最初はその理由がよく分かりませんでした。でも長年教えてきて、少しずつ見えてきたことがあります。近くにあるということ自体が、続けやすさにつながっているんです。仕事帰りにふらっと寄れたり、子どもの送り迎えのついでに通えたり。そんな小さなことの積み重ねが、結局は英語を長く続ける力になっているようです。

この教室に来る理由は、生徒様によって本当にさまざまです。

中学生は英検の面接に向けて練習に来ることが多いです。土曜日しか時間が取れない方は、土曜日のレッスンに落ち着くことが多く、他の生徒様と一緒に学びたい方は、グループレッスンを選びます。そしてたまに、家族そろって教室に通われることもあります。

1998年から同じ場所で英語を教えているので、生徒様が入れ替わっていく様子も、街が少しずつ変わっていく様子も、ずいぶん見てきました。教え方も、気づけば少しずつ変わってきたと思います。最初の頃と比べると、生徒様一人ひとりに合う方法を見つけることにより集中しています。

生駒は決して大きな街ではありません。でも、それがちょうどいいと感じることがあります。私と生徒様の距離が近いから、その人に合ったやり方を見つけやすいんです。

Why Learn English in Ikoma

I'm Les, the owner and teacher at Smith's School of English Ikoma. I've been teaching English in Ikoma City since 1998. Today I want to talk about something a little different: why people choose to learn English here, in Ikoma, instead of somewhere else.

From Ikoma, the train gets you to Osaka or Nara without much trouble. If someone wanted to commute to a big-name school in the city, that option is right there. Even so, a lot of my students choose to learn close to home instead.

Honestly, I didn't fully understand why at first. Over the years it's become clearer to me. Being nearby just makes it easier to keep showing up, whether that means stopping by on the way home from work or fitting a lesson in around picking up the kids. Those small things add up, and in the end, they're what keeps someone learning English long-term.

The reasons people walk through this door are different for almost everyone.

Junior high students often come in to get ready for their Eiken interview. Some students only have Saturdays free, so they end up in our Saturday lessons instead. A few prefer learning alongside other people and join the group lessons. And every so often, a whole family walks in together.

It's a mixed bag of reasons, honestly, but most of them come down to something pretty simple. People just want a way to keep learning English in Ikoma without it turning into one more thing they can't keep up with.

I've been teaching in the same spot since 1998, so I've had a long look at students coming and going, and at the town changing around all of us. My own teaching has shifted too along the way. These days I pay a lot more attention to what actually works for each student than I did when I started.

Ikoma isn't a big city. Some days I think that's exactly what makes it work here. Being close to my students makes it easier to find something that actually fits each one of them.

Maybe you've thought about learning English but never quite figured out where to start. It doesn't have to be a big-name school somewhere far away.
