日本という国の好きなところ

Hi everybody, it's Derek from Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi. I earlier wrote about things that I like about Japanese people in What I Like About Japanese People. Today, I'm going to write about things that I like about Japan. Let's get started!
Lost & Found
If you lose something in Japan, there is a good chance that you will be able to get it back. This is because Japanese people are taught from a young age to bring things that they find to either lost and found centers in train stations or police boxes anywhere called koban. Unclaimed items at lost and found centers are eventually turned over to the police. I once lost my smart phone in Tsukaguchi, Amagasaki. I contacted the police with the help of my wife, and I was able to pick it up at a police box in Tsukaguchi on the same day. It is quite amazing!
Low Crime Rate
Japan has a low crime rate compared to some other countries which makes it a safe place to live in. For example, people leave their belongings on tables and chairs at coffee shops to save them while they are ordering at the counter. That's because they don't expect people to steal them. That is quite special in Japan!
Japanese Lessons
Japan offers free or virtually free local Japanese classes for foreigners. Hyogo Prefecture currently offers Japanese classes in all municipalities. I took Japanese lessons for years in Amagasaki that were given by an Amagasaki volunteer association. It cost just 1,000 yen per month. I really appreciated the kindness of the volunteers who taught me Japanese.
Rich Traditional Culture
With a rich traditional culture, Japan has many traditional crafts which foreigners can experience. Calligraphy, the Japanese tea ceremony, origami and flower arranging (ikebana) are just some of them.
Watching the Japanese Tea Ceremony
I had the opportunity to enjoy a Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi student preform the Japanese tea ceremony at Tomatsu Shrine in Tsukaguchi, Amagasaki. It was a hobby of his and he was even licensed in it. You can read about my experience by clicking here.
Enjoying Japanese Crafts
I also had the chance to try and enjoy many Japanese crafts at a Japanese culture and workshop day at Kansai University. The Youth Support Committee of Japan-America Society of Osaka (JASO) and Kansai University held the event. こんにちは、スミス英会話塚口校のデレックです。「日本の人々の好きなところ」のページでは、日本に在住して20年以上になる私の日本人の好きなところについて書きました。今回は、日本という国の好きなところについてお話しようと思います。それでは始めましょう！
落とし物
日本では落し物をしても、戻ってくる可能性が高いです。日本では幼い頃から落とし物を見つけたら届けるように教えられているからでしょう。そのため駅や交番の落し物センターに集められます。申し出のなかった落し物は最終的に警察へ渡されます。道で拾われた落し物の多くは交番へ直接届けられます。私は一度スマートフォンを尼崎市の塚口で失くしました。妻の助けを借りて、失くした場所の警察に連絡をしました。スマートフォンは届けられていてその日のうちに交番で受け取ることができたのです。本当にびっくりしました！
治安が良い
日本の大好きな所のひとつは、他の国に比べて犯罪が少ないことです。例えば、他の国ほど窃盗がありません。カフェ等では、注文をする間席を確保するためにテーブルや椅子の上に自分の物を置いておくという光景がよくあります。これは他の国にはない日本特有です！
日本語レッスン
いくつかの市町村では、外国人向けのボランティアを通して無料もしくは実質無料で日本語のレッスンを提供しています。私の住む兵庫県では全ての市町村で日本語レッスンを提供しています。私は尼崎ボランティアセンターを通した尼崎市のボランティアで日本語のレッスンを何年も受けていました。月に1000円という安い金額で、私に日本語を教えてくれたボランティアの方々の優しさには本当に感謝しています。
豊かな伝統文化
日本には豊かな伝統文化があり、外国人でも体験できる伝統文化がたくさんあります。書道、茶道、折り紙や華道はそのうちのほんの一部です。
茶道
私は以前、塚口にある富松神社でスミス英会話塚口校の生徒様が行った茶道のパフォーマンスを見る機会がありました。茶道は彼の趣味で、彼は茶道を教える資格も持っています。その時の体験はこちらから読んでいただけます。
日本文化ワークショップ
数年前には関西大学と大阪日米協会ユースサポートの企画で開催された“日本文化まるごとワークショップ”というイベントで日本の伝統工芸にトライするという機会がありました。とても楽しかったです。1回目の参加についてのブログはこちら、2回目のブログはこちらからお読みいただけます。
