Teacher Derek's Hobbies

Hi, it's Derek from Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi in Amagasaki. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy doing my hobbies. Today, I'm going to share my hobbies with you. Let's get started!

Studying Acting

One of my hobbies is studying acting. Let me explain how this came about.
I got interested in acting for the camera when I was around 18 years old. I dreamt of acting in film. After graduating from university in Canada, I came to Japan in 1997 to teach English. It wasn't until I was 26 years old that I finally studied acting for the camera. From 2000 to 2001, I completed a course at a college in Canada and received a diploma in acting for film and television. Sadly, I did not pursue acting after the course finished. Instead, I came back to Japan to teach English again in 2001. I've been living and teaching English in Japan ever since. 

Following My Dream

Though I enjoy teaching English in Tsukaguchi very much, my dream of acting in film has never has gone away. So in December of 2022, I started taking online acting lessons with an acting school called Houde School of Acting. This school is located in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The teachers are great. Most of them are also working actors which is great for students. What's especially great is that I can study acting while teaching English at Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi. I can do this thanks to having mornings off at my school. I have enjoyed lessons in acting technique, script analysis, self-taping and improvisation. Also, I practice acting with other acting students online. I plan to use this training to eventually get work in film.

Weight Training

Another hobby of mine is weight training. I first started weight training at the age of 14 or 15. I have done it most of my life and even when I did not, I did other forms of resistance exercises such as push-ups. Currently, I am enjoying weight training at Anytime Fitness in Tsukaguchi, Amagasaki. It is conveniently located near Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi. Also, I can go anytime which is great. I like going there at night after teaching English in Tsukaguchi. 

Classical Guitar

Another hobby that I have is classical guitar. I first started playing classical guitar at the age of 9. I took private lessons regularly until about 15 years old and also 1 year in university in Canada when I did a minor in music. Here in Japan, I briefly took private lessons. I also was part of a classical guitar practice circle for a while. These days, I enjoy practicing classical guitar at Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi in between English lessons.

演技の勉強

私の趣味の１つは、演技の勉強です。どのように始めたのかお話しします。
18歳くらいの頃、私はカメラの前で演技をすることに興味がありました。映画に出るのが夢でした。カナダの大学を卒業した後、私は1997年に英語を教えるため日本に来ました。そして26歳になってようやく演技の勉強をしました。2000年から2001年まで勉強し、カナダのカレッジのコースを修了して、映画・テレビ演技の修了証を取りました。残念ながら、コース終了後は演技の勉強を続けずに2001年に日本に戻ってきました。それから今まで日本に住んで英語を教えています。

夢を追う

塚口校で英語を教えるのをとても楽しんでいますが、映画で演技をするという夢はずっとあります。そのため、2022年の12月にアメリカ、オハイオ州のクリーブランドにあるハウド・スクール・オブ・アクティングの演技レッスンをオンラインで取り始めました。講師たちはみんな素晴らしいです。講師のほとんどが俳優の仕事をしているというのは、生徒たちとっても良いことです。素晴らしいことに、塚口校の英会話レッスンが入っていない午前中にできることです。演技テクニック、脚本分析、セルフ撮影や即興などのレッスンを楽しく受けています。他の生徒とオンラインで演技の練習もしています。最終的にはこのトレーニングを活かして映画の仕事をしたいと思っています。

ウェイトトレーニング

他にはウェイトトレーニングの趣味もあります。初めてウェイトトレーニングをしたのは14歳か15歳の時です。人生のほとんどトレーニングをしてきており、ウェイトトレーニングをしない時でも腕立て伏せのような筋肉に負荷をかけるトレーニングをします。最近は尼崎市、塚口にあるエニタイムフィットネスでトレーニングをしています。ここのジムは塚口校から近く便利な場所にあります。そして、いつでも好きな時に行けるのが良いです。私は、塚口校の英会話レッスンが終わった後、夜に行くのが好きです。

クラシックギター

もう1つの趣味はクラシックギターです。初めてクラシックギターを弾いたのは9才の時です。15歳くらいまで定期的にプライベートレッスンを受けていて、カナダの大学で1年副専攻をしていました。日本では少しの間プライベートレッスンを受けましたし、クラシックギターの練習サークルに所属していました。最近では、塚口校での英会話レッスンの合間に練習を楽しんでいます。
