相模原市中央区では美しいライトの装飾や冬のイルミネーションが12月に始まり、通常2月まで続きます。12月の始めに相模原市職員による道路の両脇にある街路樹の剪定から始まります。春や夏の間、街路樹の葉や枝は急速に育ちます。夏は強い日差しや暑さから歩行者を守り、冬には春夏とは違った美しさに姿を変えます。イルミネーションは毎年違う色になり、2024-25年の今年は青です。

Sagamihara City, Chuo Ward displays some beautiful lights and winter illumination beginning in December and usually lasting into February. It begins in early December with Sagamihara City workers cropping the trees along both sides of the street. The leaves and branches on these trees grow quickly throughout the spring and summer. In summer they provide some much needed protection for pedestrians from the strong sunshine and heat. In winter the street is transformed into a different kind of beauty. Every year different colors are featured. This year (2024-25) is blue.

Because Sagamihara City itself is so vast, many of the local residents don’t know about the holiday lights in the business district of Chuo Ward. Last December a friend of mine who lives in Kamimizo Sagamihara met me in the afternoon for a late lunch at a great seafood restaurant called “Yataizushi”located just 3 minutes from Smith’s School of English Sagamihara. We left the restaurant at about 5:00pm. As the sun goes down very early in winter here, he was surprised to see the impressive illumination here in Chuo Ward. He didn’t know about it.

A few of my daytime English students decided to reschedule their lessons for evening and commented about how pretty the Sagamihara City business district is at night. They had no idea that this happens every year.

The mood outside Smith’s School of English Sagamihara changes throughout the day. In the morning it is all business. Sagamihara Station is bustling with activity. Commuters are in a rush to get to their workplaces. Buses are constantly shuttling people to their destinations. At midday things slow down. Shoppers are out and it is relatively quiet. Evening hits and the commuters are going home; the restaurants and bars fill up. It gets a bit noisy outside, but it is good to know that the workers are enjoying themselves and supporting the local businesses here on the main strip leading to Sagamihara Station.

The blue illumination this year and every year is a beautiful thing to see. I am happy that my English school is situated in this vibrant area of Sagamihara. I think it is a perfect location for me and anyone considering a try at becoming confident with spoken English. Sagamihara Station is just 3 minutes from Smith’s School of English, buses run frequently, making it a very convenient location.
