Sagamihara English students at Smith’s School of English have the great benefit of a scheduling system that allows them to make changes that suit their needs. It is a very user-friendly system that often allows them to make changes online. I love the system, especially after what happened in my English classroom recently.

One of my English students here in Sagamihara entered my classroom a few weeks ago with a sad face. Naomi enjoys her job working in a pediatric medical clinic as a receptionist in Aihara, Sagamihara, and has been studying English conversation at Smith’s School of English Sagamihara for exactly one year. She said “I have some good news and bad news…”

She told us (myself and 2 other English students) the story in very good English-   “You know I work in a children’s clinic, and Thursday is my day off, so I study English conversation on Thursday. The bad news is that I can no longer continue to come because I took a second job at a cafe, and now have to work on Thursday afternoon. But I am so happy to get a job at Zebra Cafe in Tsukui Town!  I enjoy making sandwiches and other food for people, and the cafe is in my hometown of Tsukui, Sagamihara. It is very relaxing and fun for me (the “good news”). But I’m going to have to stop taking English lessons at Smith’s Sagamihara.”

I listened intently, and could see that she wasn’t happy about giving up English lessons for another job. Then I got an idea. I pulled up my schedule and put it on the monitor for her to see. Many Sagamihara English students study at night. I pointed to lesson slots throughout the week that she could join and said “you can change your lesson time and come here, here, here, etc.” I also said “this slot on Thursday evening is especially good and fun; you would enjoy it.”

Her face lit up with a smile. “Really?” she said. “Yes, just change your lesson time. Call Smith School of English Head Office and it’s done! Keep going. You’re doing so well!” She was delighted with that idea. She didn’t know that she could change her lesson time! Anyone can do it, and that is part of the beauty of being an English student at Smith’s School of English! And then she said “okay, I’ll stay!”

Since then, she started attending English class on Thursday evening and I noticed something very amazing. She was a bit nervous about studying with new people, but within 10 minutes she was speaking better than I’ve ever heard her speak. The other students gave her a very friendly welcome and it seemed that all her inhibitions about speaking English were gone. She was speaking without fear, just like the other two students. Another “star English student” in Sagamihara!  I love it!

I am very happy that she didn’t give up. I’m also very grateful for the flexibility of the scheduling system at Smith’s School of English. Without such a flexible system, Smith’s School of English Sagamihara would have lost a great, fun English student that is full of potential and improving all the time!
