生徒様の成功談

スミス英会話相模原校には初級者から上級者まで様々な生徒様が通われています。生徒様の年齢もまた学生から上は70代の方まで様々です。スミス英会話相模原校では、大人の方を中心に英会話レッスンを行っています。それは、スミス英会話相模原校ではABCといった基本から“英語を教える”というレッスンは行っておらず、英語を話す“自信をつけるためのコーチ”を目指しているからです。相模原校に通っていた生徒様、ヨウキさんは早くから英会話レッスンをしていたうちの1人です。

私は過去にヨウキさんについて「生徒様の成功」というブログを書いたことがありますが、彼についてもう一度書きたいと思います。5年前、ヨウキさんは初級者として相模原校へ通い始めました、そして上級者まで上がりました。彼は中学・高校と自分で努力を重ねて、入会時には英検の4級と3級に合格していました。昨年には、大学生レベルの英検準1級にも合格しました。彼が合格結果を見せてくれた時、私は驚きませんでした。彼が英検に合格できるかどうか私の予想が間違っていたこともありましたが、今回は合格できるとわかっていました。

2023年の夏、ヨウキさんは大学の入試試験に100%集中するためスミス英会話相模原校を休校しました。大学の英語試験には与えられたお題についての長文エッセイを英語で書くものもありました。私たちはメールで連絡を取り続けて、数カ月の間、英語のエッセイ練習のお手伝いをすることもありました。彼は2024年の2月に大学入試試験を受けて、素晴らしい大学－国際教養大学に合格しました。

大学では全ての授業が英語で行われます。最初の2年間は大学での授業に集中し、3年目は海外の大学へ留学します。大学の“姉妹校”がヨーロッパなど多くの国にあり、彼はヨーロッパに行くことを考えていると話してくれました！4年目はまた日本に戻って来るそうです。大学での4年間の勉強は、海外でよりレベルの高い勉強をするための準備になります。ヨウキさんはまた努力を重ねるでしょう、そして彼が将来日本か他の国で大学教授になっていることが想像できます。

これを書いている今は2024年の3月です。ヨウキさんは来月から大学生活が始まります。しかし、驚いたことに彼をもう一度相模原校に迎え入れることができました！彼は大学のために秋田県へ引越すまでの1ヶ月間、スミス英会話相模原校へマンツーマンレッスンで戻ってきてくれました。

彼の手伝いをすること；5年に渡って英会話が上達していくのを見られたのは英会話講師としてとても幸せでした。もう少年ではなくなり、成長したヨウキさんは世界のどこに行っても英語で何でもできます。寂しくなりますが、応援しています頑張って！

Smith’s School of English Sagamihara: English Student Success!

Smith’s School of English Sagamihara has all levels of English conversation learners, from beginners to highly advanced speakers. English conversation students here also come in all ages, currently between 13 and 70. It is rare that Smith’s Sagamihara English school accepts learners younger than first year senior high school students. The reason for that is that most of the very young students are still learning the basics in school. At Smith’s, we don’t really “teach” English conversation. Spoken English is something that we “coach.” Usually, by the end of Junior High School, English students have enough knowledge to get started at Smith’s School of English, Sagamihara. But there are exceptions, and an English student named Yoki is one of them.

I have written about Yoki’s success as an English student in the past, and I’m very happy to be writing about him again. Five years ago Yoki joined this English school at the level of “Pink” (beginner), and worked his way to “Green” (advanced English speaker). He successfully studied his way through Junior and Senior High School, also passing 3 or 4 of the Eiken tests. Last year he passed the Eiken Pre-First Grade, which is a university level test. I wasn’t surprised when he showed me his test results. I had been wrong before in my predictions, but this time I knew he would pass the test.

Last summer (2023) Yoki decided to go on “leave” from Smith’s School of English Sagamihara in order to commit 100% of his time to studying for his university entrance examination. Part of the English test included writing a lengthy essay on a given topic. We kept in touch through email, and it was my pleasure to help him for a few months with English essay writing. He took the university entrance examination last February (2024) and was accepted to a very impressive school-  Akita International University.

All classes at this university are taught in English. The first two years focus on academics. Students go abroad for the third year. Yoki tells me there are “sister schools” in many countries, including Europe, and he’s thinking about going there! The fourth year is back at the university in Akita. The entire four years of study prepares students for a higher level of education abroad. I have no doubt that Yoki will succeed again, and envision him as a university professor someday, either in Japan or another country.

It is now March 2024. Yoki will be on his way next month. However, I was recently surprised and happy to welcome him again! Yoki decided to return to Smith’s School of English Sagamihara as a private student for the month of March before moving to Akita.

Helping this boy; witnessing this boy’s impressive progress in English conversation over the past 5 years has been a very satisfying part of my job. He is not a boy anymore. Yoki is a young man who is ready and able to do anything with English. The world is his. I will miss him. Congratulations and best of luck! Sayonara, Yoki.
