I'm Les, the owner and teacher at Smith's School of English Ikoma. I've been teaching in Ikoma City since 1998. Today I want to talk about travel English — the most motivating kind of English there is.

I remember a student who came to me two months before a big overseas trip. She said, "I can order at McDonald's… but what if something goes wrong?" We laughed — but that fear is completely understandable. What if you get lost? What if your bag goes missing? What if the menu has nothing you recognise? Those "what if" moments are exactly what we practise together. Real scenarios, real language, real confidence.

Travel English is completely different from textbook English. In my lessons, we cover checking into a hotel, asking locals for recommendations, handling a cancelled flight, and making small talk at a café. My students are almost always surprised by how much they can actually say when the pressure is on.
