私はレス、スミス英会話生駒校のオーナー講師です。1998年から生駒市で教えています。25年以上の間に、たくさんの家族が教室に来てくださいました。今日は、家族で英語を学ぶことについて、私が経験してきたことをお話しします。

忘れられない生徒様がいます。中学校に入ったばかりの男の子と、お父さんが一緒にレッスンに来てくれました。お父さんは学生時代から英語が好きで、コミュニケーションの才能がある方でした。

2年半、二人は同じ教室で一緒に学びました。最初はお父さんの英語力が上でしたが、面白いことが起きました。息子さんのリスニング力がお父さんを超えたのです。若い耳の力は本当にすごいと改めて感じました。

親子が同じ教室にいると、ちょっとした魔法が起きます。お互いに刺激し合い、家でも英語の話題が自然に出てきます。そして何より、お父さんは息子さんがどんな教育を受けているか、私がどう教えているかを直接見ることができました。これは信頼関係を築く上で、とても大きなことです。

最終的に、息子さんは大学受験の準備のためにお辞めになりましたが、2年半の英語体験は確実に彼の力になっています。

25年以上教えてきて、一つ分かったことがあります。兄弟姉妹は別々のクラスの方がうまくいきます。

保護者の方にとっては、お子さんを同じ時間に連れてくる方が便利です。それはよく分かります。でも、兄弟姉妹が同じクラスにいると、ライバル心が生まれやすくなります。結果として、どちらかが英語を楽しめなくなってしまうことがあるのです。

別々のクラスに通っている兄弟姉妹は、それぞれが自分のペースで学べます。英語に対する姿勢も良く、結果的に長く続けてくれます。これは私が実際に何組もの兄弟姉妹を見てきた上での体験です。

10年以上通ってくれる生徒様を見てきて、興味深いパターンに気づきました。多くの場合、高校を過ぎてから急に英語力が伸びます。くるみさんの成功談もまさにそうでした。20年間通い続けて、大学生になってから開花したのです。

Families Learning English Together — What I've Seen in 25 Years

I'm Les, the owner and teacher at Smith's School of English Ikoma. I've been teaching in Ikoma City since 1998. Over more than 25 years, many families have walked through my door. Today I want to share what I've learned about families learning English together.

I had a student I'll never forget. A boy who had just started junior high school came to lessons together with his father. The father had liked English since his student days and had a natural talent for communication.
For two and a half years, the two of them learned side by side in the same classroom. At first, the father's English was stronger, but something interesting happened. The son's listening ability surpassed his father's. The power of young ears never ceases to amaze me.
When a parent and child share a classroom, something magical happens. They motivate each other, and English naturally comes up at home. Most importantly, the father could see firsthand what education his son was getting, how I taught, and what to expect. This is incredibly valuable for building trust between teacher and student.
Eventually, the son stopped coming to prepare for university entrance exams, but those two and a half years of English experience are surely part of who he is today.

After more than 25 years of teaching, I've learned one thing clearly: siblings do better in separate classes.

I understand that for parents, bringing children at the same time is more convenient. But when siblings share a class, rivalry tends to develop. One of them often ends up not enjoying English.

Siblings in separate classes can learn at their own pace. They have better attitudes toward English, and they tend to continue longer. This isn't theory — it's what I've observed across many families over the years.

Having watched students who attend for ten or more years, I've noticed a fascinating pattern. In many cases, their English ability takes off after high school. Kurumi's success story is a perfect example — she attended for 20 years and truly blossomed in university.

Children's English progress isn't always immediately visible. But children from families that have a culture of learning English tend to achieve remarkable growth in the end. You plant the seed, keep watering it, and the flower blooms — perhaps a little later than you expected.
