音の花温泉

日本に住み仕事をする利点の一つは、温泉に行きやすいことです。私は奈良県の生駒市に住んでいます。奈良に来て驚いたのはあまり温泉がないということですが、生駒市には温泉がひとつあります。

音の花温泉(ねのはなおんせん)という天然温泉で、私の家から車に乗って10分程で行けます。私は早起きするタイプなので、日曜の朝に早起きをした時はここへ行きます、朝はまだ混んでいないので露天風呂でゆっくり手足を伸ばすことができます。すこし遅い時間になると混雑してきますので、通常その時間は避けます。とても清潔で、室内の温泉と露天風呂の両方が楽しめます。

Nenohana

One of the great things about working and living in japan, is your access to hot springs. I live in Naraken, in Ikoma city. One of the surprising things is there aren't many hot springs in Nara in general, but one of them is right here in Ikoma city.

It's called Nenohana onsen, and it's only about a 10 minute drive from my house. I'm an early riser, so if I get up early on Sunday morning I can go and stretch out in the outdoor hot tub and there's not many people there. Later in the day it gets a bit crowded, so I usually avoid those times. It's really clean and it has both indoor and outdoor hot tubs.

I really enjoy surprising students when I talk about the hot spring in Ikoma. Of course some students know about it, but a lot of students don't know about it.  Even if they do know about it,  they don't think of it in terms of a hot spring. When I mentioned it in my Smith school of Ikoma class, many of them go “oh yeah that's right there, is a hot spring here”. And then they feel pretty good about living in Ikoma. After that we can get into a nice English conversation about bathing customs around the world. It makes for a great topic in class.
