スミス英会話生駒校の生徒様くるみさんが初めて生駒校に来たのは、2歳のときでした。お母様が「英語は早く始めた方がいい」と考え、連れてきてくださいました。あれから20年。くるみさんは今、カナダから帰ってきたばかりです。

私はレス、スミス英会話生駒校のオーナー講師です。1998年から生駒市で教えています。25年以上の指導経験の中で、くるみさんの成長は私にとって特別な存在です。

正直に言うと、くるみさんは何年もの間、積極的に家で予習復習をやるタイプではありませんでした。文法がすごく得意だったわけでもありません。でも、毎週教室に来ました。年を重ねるごとに、大切なものが育っていきました。

カナダでのくるみさんは、現地の人たちと友達になり、メールアドレスやプレゼントを交換しました。アルバータ州の国立公園内にあるエメラルド色の美しい湖レイクルイーズの美しさに感動し、カナダの大自然を体験しました。

帰国後、くるみさんはこう言いました。「世界はこんなに広いんだと実感しました。でも、その広い世界に自分から手を伸ばせるんだと分かりました。もう怖くないです。」

この言葉を聞いたとき、私は本当に感動しました。2歳の女の子が、22歳の自信に満ちた女性になった。その20年間の旅を見守れたことは、教師としてこれ以上ない喜びです。

カナダから帰ってきたくるみさんは、英語力だけでなく、自信も大きく成長しました。私の言うことを100%理解する必要がないと分かっている。要点をつかんで、少し考えて、でもほとんど迷わずに返答する。素晴らしいです。

From Age 2 to Age 22 — Kurumi's English Journey

Kurumi first came to the Ikoma school when she was two years old. Her mother believed that the younger you start, the better, and brought her along. That was 20 years ago. Today, Kurumi has just returned from Canada.

I'm Les, the owner and teacher at Smith's School of English Ikoma. I've been teaching in Ikoma City since 1998. In over 25 years of teaching, Kurumi's growth holds a special place for me.

I'll be honest — for many years, Kurumi wasn't the type to eagerly do her homework. Grammar was never her strong point. But she came to the classroom every week. And over those years, something important was growing.

She grew to like English. She became comfortable hearing it. And most importantly, she developed an identity — a natural sense that English was something she could do. This is something deeper than any test score can measure.

Kurumi's mother faithfully supported her English learning for the entire 20 years. The power of parental support is something Kurumi's story proves beyond any doubt.

After high school, something changed. Kurumi chose to study English at university, her confidence grew, and her skills took off. The years of building listening techniques finally bloomed.

Then Kurumi flew to Victoria, British Columbia. She did a homestay on Vancouver Island, attended a language school, and spent six weeks immersed in English and Canadian life.

In Canada, Kurumi made friends with people from around the world, exchanging email addresses and gifts. She traveled to see Lake Louise and was moved by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness.

When she came back, Kurumi told me: "I realized how much wider and bigger the world is. But I also realized I can reach out and be part of that world. It's not scary anymore."

When I heard those words, I was truly moved. A two-year-old girl had become a confident 22-year-old woman. Being able to watch that 20-year journey and play a part in it — that's the greatest reward a teacher can have.

Since returning from Canada, Kurumi has grown not just in English ability, but in confidence. She knows she doesn't need to understand 100% of what I say to grasp the meaning and respond. She thinks for a moment, but there's almost no hesitation. She's great.
