私はレス、スミス英会話生駒校のオーナー講師です。1998年から生駒市で英語を教えています。今日は、私がとくに大切にしていること――会話の自信をどうやって育てるか――についてお話ししたいと思います。

長年英会話を教えてきて、こんな場面を何度も見てきました。初回のレッスンに来て「私は英語が全然話せません」とおっしゃった生徒様が、数ヶ月後に笑いながら英語でジョークを言っている。

話せないのではなく、話す場所がなかっただけだったのです。

英語は知識ではなく、スキルです。リーディングやリスニングを何年やっても、スピーキングは実際に口から出してみることで初めて成長します。生駒校のレッスンでは、話し方についてテキストで学ぶのではなく、生徒様が実際に話す時間を意識的に多くとっています。

Building Conversation Confidence - Finding Your Voice in Ikoma

I'm Les, the owner and teacher at Smith's School of English Ikoma. I've been teaching English in Ikoma City since 1998. Today I want to talk about something I care deeply about - helping students actually trust themselves to speak English.

After many years of teaching, I've seen the same thing happen again and again. Someone walks into their first lesson and tells me, "I can't speak English at all." A few months later, they're cracking jokes in English and laughing about it.

They could speak. They just hadn't had anywhere to do it.

English is a skill, not just knowledge. You can read and listen for years, but speaking only develops when you actually open your mouth and try. I make sure my students spend a lot of time actually talking - not studying about talking, but doing it.

One of the things I focus on is changing how students feel about making mistakes.

I've learned Japanese myself, so I know from the inside what it feels like to reach for a word and come up short. It's uncomfortable. But it's also how language learning actually works. In my lessons, I listen for errors and gently redirect to natural phrasing - without making students feel embarrassed or corrected. The goal is a quiet "oh, so that's how you say it" feeling, not a red-pen moment.

This is part of why complete beginners feel comfortable from the start - there's no pressure to be perfect.

I'm also a listening specialist, and I've found that conversation confidence and listening ability are closely connected.

When you can hear what someone says clearly, finding the right response becomes much easier. When you can't quite make out the words, anxiety takes over and your speaking confidence drops with it. In my lessons, I work on both skills together - the way sounds connect in natural speech, the parts that are easy to mishear, the rhythm of real conversation. Students often notice that as their listening improves, speaking starts to feel less like a performance and more like a conversation.

Practicing with other people makes a real difference. In my group lessons, students have actual back-and-forth exchanges - not just teacher-to-student drills. Every small moment of "I said that, they understood me" builds on the last one. After a while, students stop thinking about whether they can speak and just start speaking.
