スミス英会話生駒校でオーナー講師をしているレスです。1998年から生駒市で英語を教えてきました。今日は生駒校のある生徒様、彼女の忘れることができない、ある瞬間についてお話ししたいと思います。

カヨリさんが初めてスミス英会話生駒校へ来たのは6年前です。お友だちと一緒に体験レッスンに来てくれたのですが、レッスン中ほとんどの時間で笑いがありました。そして体験レッスンが終わるころにはそのまま入会を決めてくれました。私はこういう始まり方がいちばん好きなんです。楽しい空気を持ち込んでくれる生徒様が来ると、生駒校のクラス全体がふっと明るくなります。

そのときの彼女の表情を、私は今でもよく覚えています。驚きとうれしさが入りまじったような、自分でも信じられないという顔でした。正直なところ、私がこの仕事を続けている理由はここにあります。何年も地道に練習を重ねて、ある普通の日に、効果が表れるのです。

それからも、カヨリさんは日本を訪れた旅行者と話す機会が何度かあったそうです。英語を使うために、わざわざ海外へ行く必要はありませんでした。旅行英語は、海外旅行に行く人だけのものではありません。近ごろは日本にも世界中から観光客が来ますし、生駒もその例外ではありません。

そして今、カヨリさんは観光客のガイドをする準備を進めているそうです。6年前に笑顔で体験レッスンに来てくれた彼女が、外国の旅行客を案内しようとしている。本当に素晴らしいことです。

カヨリさんについて私がいちばん誇らしく思うのは、彼女のリスニング力です。毎週コツコツと練習を続けて、今では私の言うことの9割ほどを聞き取れます。スピーキング力もこの1年でずいぶん伸びました。文がすっと出てくるようになり、彼女らしい言い回しになってきました。
グループレッスンを地道に続けると、こういうことが起きます。しばらくは成長が見えにくいのですが、ある日、電車内でおしゃべりができた時、今までの練習はずっと積み重ねられていたのだと分かるのです。

A Student's Success Story

I'm Les, the owner and teacher here at Smith's School of English Ikoma. I've taught in Ikoma City since 1998. Today I want to tell you about one of my students, and about a moment of hers that has stuck with me.

Kayori first walked into my school six years ago. She came along with a friend, and honestly the two of them spent most of the trial lesson laughing. By the end, she had signed up. That is my favourite way for things to begin. When someone brings that sort of energy through the door, the whole class warms up a bit.
Six years on, she is still coming to lessons every week.

About a year ago she arrived at class clearly excited to tell me something. She'd been on the train when a foreign tourist started talking to her, and the two of them had managed a proper little conversation.

It wasn't long. But it was real. No warning, a total stranger, and she handled it.

I can still picture her face as she told me. There was this mix of surprise and delight, as if she couldn't quite believe she'd pulled it off. Honestly, that is the reason I do this job. You put in the quiet practice for years, and then one ordinary day it simply works.

Since then she's had several more chats with visitors to Japan. She hasn't had to travel overseas to use her English at all. Travel English isn't only for trips abroad. Japan gets tourists from everywhere these days, and Ikoma is no exception.

Now she's getting ready to actually guide a few tourists herself. The woman who came in laughing six years ago is about to start showing foreign visitors around. I think that's wonderful.

The thing I'm proudest of with Kayori is her listening. She has worked at it patiently, week after week, and these days she catches roughly 90% of what I say. Her speaking has come on a lot in the past year too. The sentences arrive faster now, and they sound more like her own.

That is what steady work in group lessons tends to do. For a long time the progress is quiet and hard to see. Then one day you're chatting away on a train and you realise it had been adding up the whole time.
