Smith’s School of English Curriculum

Hi, it’s Derek from Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi. The curriculum that I use in my English lessons in Tsukaguchi, Amagasaki has evolved since I joined the Smith’s franchise school system in 2002.  Today, I’m going to write about the evolution of the Smith’s curriculum over the years. Let’s get started! 

Smith’s School of English Curriculum 

The Smith’s curriculum was first created by Smith’s teachers' way back in 1996 when Smith’s School of English began. It was a course of study designed to provide a framework and direction of study for students and a commonality between English teachers. While Smith’s Head Office encouraged Smith’s English schools to use it, it was not mandatory and Smith’s English teachers had a lot of freedom in how to teach it. 

Smith’s Expanded Curriculum 

Next, a Smith’s School of English school owner and teacher created a new curriculum that we called “the expanded curriculum”. Some of the older curriculum could still be used separately.  

Digital Curriculum  

Next, all Smith’s curriculum was made digital so that Smith’s English teachers could teach them on computer screens. This was part of Smith’s Head Office’s push towards going digital.  

Current Curriculum  

These days, Smith’s Head Office leaves it almost entirely up to the Smith’s English school owners and teachers to decide what to teach at their English schools. It does require us all to give our students weekly one-point English assignments for homework, but that’s it. I really like this freedom to choose what to teach at my English school in Tsukaguchi, Amagasaki. 

Why Smith’s Teachers Deciding Lesson Material Is Best   

I think that only the English teachers can know what is best for their students. Smith’s English teachers can adjust their lessons to meet the needs of their students. This allows them to better serve their English students and help students better meet their goals. 

Creating New Curriculum for My Students  

I earlier wrote about basing English lessons on students’ lives in “塚口校の英会話レッスン”. Recently, I’ve been enjoying creating new lessons for my Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi students using Keynote. I choose a topic and make questions on the topic. In the questions, I review or teach new things to help my English students improve their English vocabulary. I display the questions on a 40-inch screen where students can easily see them. Then I have the students answer them to improve their English conversational skills. Some students have praised this way of teaching English which made me happy. I am happy to work in the Smith’s School of English franchise school system where I have the freedom to teach my English students what I want and how I want. How lucky I am! こんにちは、スミス英会話塚口校のデレックです。スミス英会話塚口校の英会話レッスンで使用しているカリキュラムは、私がスミス英会話に入った2002年当時のものよりも進化しました。今日はスミス英会話カリキュラムの進化について書いて行こうと思います。それでは始めましょう！

スミス英会話カリキュラム

スミス英会話のカリキュラムは1996年のスミス英会話創立時に講師たちによって作られました。当時のものは、学習についての枠組みや方向性、それぞれのスクールの講師間の共通性を持たせるカリキュラムでした。スミス英会話本部はそのカリキュラムを使うことを奨励しながらも、必須ではなく英会話講師たちにはどのように教えるかということに自由がありました。

拡張版カリキュラム

次に、スミス英会話のオーナー講師たちで“the Expanded Curriculum (拡張版カリキュラム”と呼んでいる新しいカリキュラムを作りました。以前からのカリキュラムも使えます。

デジタル教材

そしてスミス英会話の全ての教材はデジタル化されていて、講師たちは教材をパソコンのスクリーン上で表示させることができます。これはスミス英会話がデジタル化を進めたうちのひとつです。

現在の教材

現在では、スミス英会話で使用するほぼすべての教材がスミス英会話スクールそれぞれのオーナー講師の判断に任されていて、英会話レッスン内で何を教えるかについて決定することができます。毎週送信されるスミス英会話ワンポイントレッスンを全ての生徒様にレッスン前に行うようにお願いしていますが、それだけです。スミス英会話塚口校の英会話レッスンで何を教えるかを決められる自由があることが好きです。

講師が決めるべきレッスン内容

それぞれのスクールの生徒様にはどのような英会話レッスンがベストなのかを理解しているのはそのスクールの講師だと思います。スミス英会話の講師たちは、生徒様のニーズに合わせレッスンを調整することができます。これにより生徒様により良いサービスを提供して、彼らの目標を達成するお手伝いをすることができます。

塚口校新しい教材

以前書いた“塚口校の英会話レッスン”の中で、「日々の暮らしをもとにした英会話レッスン」をしているとお話ししました。最近は、塚口校の英会話レッスンで使う新しいレッスンを作るのを楽しんでいます。話題になるトピックを選び、その話題に対しての質問を作ります。質問では、これまでの復習をしたり英語の語彙力を増やすために新しいことを学んだりします。生徒様からも見えやすい40インチのスクリーンに質問を表示させています。そして質問に答えることで英会話力を向上させます。この新しいレッスン方法を褒めてくれている生徒様もいて、とても嬉しくなりました！私は塚口校の生徒様に何をどのように教えるかという自由がある、スミス英会話のスクールシステムで仕事をすることができて幸せです。なんて幸運なのでしょうか！スミス英会話本部に感謝します。(^.^)
