Hi everybody! It's Derek, the Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi teacher. Today I will share my journey from living in Canada to teaching English at Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi in Amagasaki, Japan. Let's get started!

University Summer Job in Canada

My journey to Japan first started in 1997 in Canada. Many students from a woman's university in Yamaguchi Prefecture came to my university in the province of Quebec to take a 1-month English as a second language course during the summer. My job was, together with another person, to organize activities for the students to do outside classroom time and to do the activities with them. We enjoyed activities at the university and also trips to Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City and Niagara Falls together!

I very much enjoyed the time I spent with the Japanese university students and I am sure they enjoyed their time in Canada too!

Deciding to Teach English in Japan

I heard about the opportunity to teach English in Japan and did some research. There apparently were many good job opportunities to teach English in Japan. It sounded exciting and I wanted to travel. Moreover I could also get a working holiday visa from Canada which would allow me to work in Japan for up to 1 year. So after finishing university, I decided to go to Japan and teach English there!

Finding My First Job Teaching English in Japan

I first arrived in Japan in October 1997. At the Osaka Working Holiday Center in Osaka, there were job offers in different parts of Japan. I found a job offer in Yamaguchi Prefecture where the university students I had worked with had been from. I set up an interview which led to me getting my first job teaching English in Japan in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture!

Teaching English in Yamaguchi Prefecture

I taught English for the English school in Ube and nearby areas in Yamaguchi Prefecture. I taught kids, teenagers and adults. I stayed in a house, paying part of the rent and my boss the rest. I got to English lessons by company car. The car was at the house and I could use it in my free time. I taught English in many places including a classroom in a downtown Ube building, a classroom in a shopping mall, at a cram school, at a company, in kindergartens, in family homes and the house I was living in!

On holidays, I made some trips by car in Yamaguchi Prefecture. I visited the university in Yamaguchi City where the university students that had studied at my university were going and saw a few of the students. Later, some of them visited me in Ube which made me really happy!

A student of English took me to Mine City to see Akiyoshido, the largest and longest limestone cave in Japan which was interesting!

I rode the steam locomotive SL Yamaguchi which was cool and fun!

I also enjoyed a trip to the city of Hagi. Also, I made a trip to Kyushu Prefecture and visited the cities of Kagoshima and Nagasaki which was fun.

Teaching English in Tokyo

In 1998, I moved to Tokyo where I taught English conversation to adults at an English conversation school until 1999.

After traveling in Europe for a few months in 1999, I taught English for another English school in Tokyo, teaching mostly corporate business English until 2000. After that, I went back to Canada do some studies until 2001.

Teaching English in the Kansai Area

In late 2001, I came back to Japan to teach English again but this time in the Kansai area. My first work for Smith's School of English was handing out flyers for some Smith's schools. This led to me teaching English at Smith's schools, then managing Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi and eventually owning it. I have been enjoying teaching English at my English school in Tsukaguchi, Amagasaki since April 2002. I teach mostly adults but also teach some teenagers and kids. I now have over 20 years of experience teaching English in Japan. From all the English teaching jobs that I have had in Japan, teaching English at Smith's School of English Tsukaguchi has been the best! I welcome those wishing to study English in Tsukaguchi. カナダに住んでいた頃から、どのような道のりで日本の尼崎市、塚口にあるスミス英会話で英会話を教えるようになったのかをお話したいと思います。それでは始めましょう！

日本への道のりの始まりは1997年のカナダです。山口県にある女子大学から、カナダのケベック州にある私の通っていた大学に夏休みの間多くの生徒が来て1ヶ月の英語留学をしていました。大学で夏の間アルバイトをしていた私の仕事は、日本人の生徒のために授業時間外のアクティビティの計画をすることや、生徒と共にアクティビティに参加することでした。私たちは一緒に大学でのアクティビティを楽しみましたし、モントリオール、トロントやケベック、そしてナイアガラの滝を訪れました。

私は日本の大学生たちととても楽しい時間を過ごし、彼らもカナダでの時間を楽しむことができたと思います！

日本で英語を教える

その後、私は日本では英語を教える機会があるという話しを聞き、実際に調べてみました。日本には英語を教える仕事がたくさんあるようでした。楽しそうでしたし私は旅をしたいと思っていました、さらにはカナダからワーキングホリデービザを取得すれば最長1年日本で仕事をすることが可能でした。私は大学を卒業した後、来日して英語を教えることに決めました！

日本で最初の仕事

1997年10月に私は日本に到着しました。大阪の日本ワーキングホリデー協会のオフィスに日本各地の求人情報がありました。私は、カナダの大学でサポートしていた留学生たちの大学がある山口県で求人を見つけました。面接の予定を組み、日本で行う初めての英語講師の仕事を山口県宇部市で得ました。

山口県で英語講師

山口県の宇部市とその付近の英会話スクールで英語を教えました。子供、学生から大人の方まで教えました。その当時住んでいた家は私が一部の家賃を払い、残りの家賃は会社が負担してくれました。英会話スクールへは会社の車で通い、車は住んでいた家に置いてあったので空いている時間に使うこともできました。私は宇部のオフィス街にあるビルの英会話スクール、ショッピングモールに入っている英会話スクール、塾、会社、幼稚園、民家への出張や当時住んでいた家でなど、たくさんの場所で英語を教えました。

休暇には車で山口県内を旅行しました。カナダの私の大学に短期留学に来ていた生徒たちが通う山口市の大学も訪れて数名の生徒に会えました。その後彼女たちは宇部市の私を訪ねてくれました、とても嬉しかったです！

英語を教えていた生徒の一人は私を美祢市にある日本最大級の鍾乳洞、秋芳洞へ連れて行ってくれました。おもしろかったです！

蒸気機関車のＳＬやまぐち号に乗りました、かっこよくて楽しかったです！

萩市への旅も楽しみましたし、九州へも行き鹿児島や長崎の街も訪れました。楽しかったです。

東京で英語講師

1998年、私は東京に引っ越して1999年まで大人向けの英会話スクールで英会話を教えました。

1999年にヨーロッパを数カ月旅した後、東京の別の英会話スクールで2000年まで主に企業でビジネス英語を教えました。その後、カナダに戻り2001年まで勉強をしました。

関西で英語講師

2001年の終わりに、私はもう一度英語を教えるために日本に戻ってきました、今回は関西エリアです。スミス英会話での最初の仕事は学校のチラシを配ることでした。そして英会話講師としてスミス英会話で英語を教えることになり、その後スミス英会話塚口校の管理をするようになり最終的には塚口校のオーナーになることになりました。2002年の4月から、尼崎市にあるスミス英会話塚口校で楽しく英会話を教えています。現在は主に大人の方を教えていますが、学生やお子さんも教えています。日本で英語を教えて20年以上になりました。今まで日本でしてきた英語講師の仕事の中で、スミス英会話塚口校で英会話を教える仕事が一番です！塚口で英会話を学びたい方はぜひお越しください。楽しい時間を過ごしましょう！
