Raising Bilingual Children in Japan

Hi, it’s Derek from Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi. I have a Japanese wife and we have two children. Today, I’m going to talk about why we want our children to be bilingual and how we are making that happen. Let’s get started!

How We Are Making It Happen

1. 　Using Both English and Japanese at Home

We use both English and Japanese at home. My kids and I communicate in English and my kids and wife communicate in Japanese. That way, they can learn both languages.

2. 　Sending Our Kids to International Schools

We are sending our kids to international schools. Although it’s expensive, we have strong reasons to do so.

Why We Want Our Kids to Go to International Schools

There are several reasons why we want our kids to go to international schools:

We want them to have the option of studying at top universities abroad. Both of their international schools offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) educational programmes which are recognized internationally. Upon completion of the IB Diploma Programme, our kids will have a good chance of being accepted into top universities abroad should they choose to study at universities abroad.

Going to international schools allows them to become proficient and bilingual in both English and Japanese. The main language of instruction is English, but they have Japanese classes too. Also, as there are some Japanese students going there, both Japanese and English are used amongst the students which is great for becoming bilingual in English and Japanese. Additionally, should they choose to go to a university and/or work in Japan after finishing their international school education, being bilingual will be a definite plus.

There is a mix of ethnicities at their international schools. Our children don’t look Japanese, so we prefer them going to schools where are there are other students like them, allowing them to fit in easily.

This also supports our wish to communicate with them easily at home in our own languages.

In Conclusion

My students of English at Smith’s School of English Tsukaguchi in Amagasaki sometimes ask me about how we are raising our children in Japan. Now they will know in detail. I hope that this post is also helpful to other international couples who are in a similar situation. It is an option available to them if they can and wish to follow it.

1. 　家で英語と日本語の両方を使う

私たちは家で英語と日本語の両方を使います。子供たちは私と英語で、妻と日本語でコミュニケーションを取ります。そのようにして、彼らは両方の言語を学ぶことができます。 

2. 　子供たちをインターナショナルスクールへ通わせる

私たちは子供たちをインターナショナルスクールへ通わせています。学費は高いですが、そうするための理由があります。

なぜインターナショナルスクール

なぜ私たちが子供たちをインターナショナルスクールへ通わせたいかという理由はいくつかあります：

私たちは子供たちに海外の優秀な大学で学ぶという選択肢も持ってほしいと思っています。子供たちのインターナショナルスクールには国際バカロレア（IB）という国際的に通用する大学入学資格のプログラムがあります。国際バカロレアのディプロマプログラムを修了すると、子供たちが留学したいと望んだ海外の大学に入学をする許可を得ることができます。

インターナショナルスクールへ通うと、英語と日本語両方が堪能なバイリンガルになることができます。学校でメインに使われるのは英語ですが、日本語の授業もあります。そして日本人の生徒も通っているので、生徒同士でも日本語と英語が使われていてバイリンガルになるために良い環境です。
さらに、インターナショナルスクールを卒業した後大学へ行く場合や日本で働く場合もバイリンガルであることはプラスになります。

子供たちが通うインターナショナルスクールには様々な民族をバックグラウンドに持つ生徒たちがいます。私たちの子供たちは日本人には見えないので、彼らのような生徒がいて馴染みやすいであろう学校へ通わせることを選びました。

私たち家族とそれぞれの言語で簡単にコミュニケーションを取れるようになるという希望もサポートしてくれます。
