天孫神社
スミス英会話大津校に最も近い神社。JR大津駅から徒歩わずか数百メートルの場所に位置する天孫神社（てんそんじんじゃ）は、こじんまりとしていながらも素敵な癒しの空間です。春には見事な桜が咲き誇り、神社を取り囲む塀を越えて溢れ出るように咲き、歩行者を楽しませてくれるピンクのトンネルとなります。大津祭の元宮である天孫神社。秋には、大津祭の屋台が主に集まる場所となります。

大津別院
スミス英会話大津校に最も近い寺院。真宗大谷派東本願寺の別院です。JR大津駅から琵琶湖に向かって数百メートル直進した場所に位置し、国の重要文化財に指定されています。古く美しい造りの本堂は桃山建築で広々としており、毎週・毎月のイベント（マーケット、ヨガ教室、ボードゲーム大会など）が開催されています。

石山寺

琵琶湖の南端に位置する石山寺（いしやまでら）は、大津の歴史的景観の中心的存在です。紫式部が名作『源氏物語』を執筆した地として知られ、境内にある建物や塔、樹木の大半は樹齢千年以上！苔むした庭園は静寂に包まれ、梅の庭園は早春の花見シーズンに散策を楽しむのに最適です。正門をくぐると、木々がアーチ状に連なるトンネルのような遊歩道につながり、両側の門から小さな庭園が垣間見えます。さらに奥には神聖な回廊、独特の岩肌、古木である杉や檜、そして博物館があります。

延暦寺／比叡山

京阪電車の終点「坂本・比叡山口」駅まで行き、ケーブルカーで山頂まで登ると、日本四大寺院の一つである延暦寺（えんりゃくじ）に到着します。ここは1200年以上にわたり、現役の寺院であり、仏教四大宗派の一つである真言宗の総本山として多くの修行僧を育んできました。世界的に高く評価され、1994年にはユネスコ世界文化遺産に登録されました。巨大な柱で建てられた美しい古寺建築群は、歴史的でありながら静寂に包まれています。山頂からの眺めはまさに息をのむほどで、一方には琵琶湖と滋賀県、もう一方には京都が広がり、頂上にはガーデンミュージアム比叡があります。

日吉大社

京阪電車の終点「坂本・比叡山口」駅まで行き、美しい遊歩道を10分ほど登ると、日吉大社（ひよしたいしゃ）の境内群に到着します。この清らかな場所には40の社が点在し、穏やかな小川と美しい樹木に囲まれており、約2100年の歴史を誇ります。日吉神社は、788年に創建された比叡山の延暦寺と深い関わりを持ち、1868年まで仏教と神道の融合を実践していました。境内には約3000本の見事な紅葉が茂り、秋には鮮やかな色彩に染まります。また、魔除けの霊力を持つとされるニホンザルが祀られています。この静かな聖域は、私達が海外からのゲストに、日本滞在中に必ず訪れるよう勧める場所です。

Tenson Shrine
Closest shrine to SSE Otsu. Located only a couple hundred meters from JR Otsu station, Tenson Shrine is a small but lovely little oasis. In spring the cherry blossoms are fabulous, overflowing over the walls surrounding the shrine to make a tunnel of pink for pedestrians. In Autumn this shrine is the main location for food vendors during Otsu Festival.

Otsu Betsuin
Closest temple to SSE Otsu. Located a couple hundred meters straight down from JR Otsu station, Otsu Betsuin Temple is a National Historical Site. The main building is old and beautifully built with a large main hall (Momoyama-period architecture) which hosts many weekly and monthly events, such as markets and yoga classes and board game tournaments.

Ishiyama Temple
At the south end of Lake Biwa is the centrepiece of Otsu’s historical sites: Ishiyama Temple. This was the home of Murasaki Shikibu when she was writing her famous saga, The Tales of Genji. Most of the buildings, pagodas and trees are over a thousand years old! The moss gardens are serene and the plum gardens are pleasant to wander through in early spring when the blossoms are in season. You enter through the main gate into a tunnel-like walkway with trees arching over it and little gardens we can glimpse through gateways on both sides. Further in there is a sacred grotto, unique rock formations, ancient cedar and cypress trees, plus a museum.

Enryakuji / Mt Hiei

Take the local Keihan train to the final stop on the line and then catch the Cable car up to the top of Mt Hiei and you will be at one of the four major monasteries in Japan: Enryakuji.

This has been an active monastery and home of one of the 4 major sects of Buddhism for over 1200 years. And it is highly regarded worldwide and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1994. Beautiful old temple buildings built with massive posts, Enryakuji is both historic and serene. The views from the top are truly breathtaking: Lake Biwa and Shiga prefecture on one side, Kyoto on the other and a Botanical Garden Museum Hiei at the top.

Hiyoshi Shrine

Take the local Keihan train to the final stop “Sakamoto-Hieizan-guchi” and walk up along the beautiful paths for 10 minutes and you will find Hiyoshi Taisha shrine complex. This serene place consists of 40 individual shrines surrounded by gentle streams and beautiful trees and is about 2100 years old. Hiyoshi Shrine has a long association with Enryakuji Temple on Mt Hiei, established in 788, since the temple had practised a syncretic fusion of Buddhism and Shintoism until 1868. Hiyoshi shrine has about 3000 maple trees with beautiful leaves that change their colours in Autumn. This shrine complex also has Japanese monkeys that are thought to keep evil away. This quiet sanctuary is the place Chiharu always recommends our international guests to visit while in Japan.
