大津祭

大津まつりは、毎年10月にJR大津駅前の通りで、天孫神社の祭礼として開催される大津市の年中行事で、江戸時代から続く湖国三大祭の一つです。例年10月の第2土日に開催され、「体育の日」の連休と重なることから、この時期は大変賑わいます。祭りは宵宮(よみや)と本祭(ほんまつり)で構成され、宵宮は土曜日の夕刻から21時まで、本祭は9時半から17時半までです。

土曜日は、日中に曳山(ひきやま)が組み立てられ、夜には提灯が灯され、お囃子(はやし)
が演奏される中、展示されます。通りでは、お茶やお菓子などの屋台が並びます。天孫神社では、伝統的なお祭りの食べ物や、縁日風のゲームなどの屋台も数多く出店します。家族連れは、ライトアップされた通りを散策しながら、おしゃべりや食べ歩きを楽しんだり、様々な伝統工芸品やからくり人形が展示されている町家を訪れたりします。トロイア陥落を描いた500年前のヨーロッパのタペストリーを見かけることもあるかもしれません。噂によると、このタペストリーは日本の領主への献上品だったそうですが、大きすぎたため8つに切り分けられ、そのうち1つは京都の祇園祭で、もう1つは大津市にあります。これらのタペストリーは曳山の後ろに吊るされていますが、中には個人所有のタペストリーもあり、大津市周辺の家庭に飾られています。

日曜日には曳山巡行が行われます。13基の曳山はボランティアのチームによって曳かれます。曳山は2本の脚で町中を曳かれていきます(途中でボランティアが休憩します)。曳き手は笛、太鼓、シンバルで伝統的なお囃子を奏で、拍手や歓声を上げます。また、縁起物などの品物を群衆に投げ与えたりもします。曳山で最も盛り上がるのは、曳山が方向転換する時です。車輪は固定されており、曳山は木製で非常に重いので、曳山を方向転換されるには様々な技法があり、道を曲がる度にドラマチックでスリリングな体験ができます。曳山が曲がるたびに、乗り手はガクガクと揺れ、方向転換が無事に行われると必ず歓声が上がります。そのため、最も混雑するのは交差点、特に滋賀県庁とNHKホール前です。地元の人々は2階の窓を開け、窓枠に赤い毛布を掛け、お茶会をしながら上から曳山巡行を眺めます。この光景が、この地域をお祭り気分で盛り上げてくれます。

Otsu Matsuri

Otsu Festival is an annual event held in Otsu city every October, on the streets near JR Otsu station and centred around Tenson-jinja (Shrine). Typically held on the 2nd weekend of October, it pairs nicely with the national sports day long weekend. The event is in 2 parts, the first part is on Saturday and the second part is on Sunday.

On Saturday the floats (Hikiyama) are assembled during the day and then displayed in the evening with Japanese lanterns and traditional music being performed. Vendors sell tea and sweets and other foods along the streets. Tenson-jinja also hosts a myriad of vendors selling traditional Japanese festival foods and country fair style games. Families enjoy wandering through the illuminated streets, snacking and chatting and visiting the various machiya (old houses) which host displays of various traditional goods.
You might even spot a 500 year old European tapestry depicting the Fall of Troy. Rumor has it that the tapestry was a gift to a Japanese lord but it was too big so it was cut into 8 pieces, 1 of which is in Kyoto and part of the Gion Festival and another is in Otsu. These tapestries hang off the back of the Hikiyama floats, although some tapestries are privately owned and on display in homes around Otsu.

On Sunday there is a parade. The 13 Hikiyama floats are pulled by teams of volunteers. The floats are pulled around the town on 2 legs (with a break for the volunteers in the middle). The float riders perform traditional music with flutes and drums and cymbals, as well as clapping and cheering. They also throw good luck charms and other goods to the crowds. The most exciting part of the parade is when the floats have to turn- as the wheels are fixed and the floats are made of wood and incredibly heavy. There are a
variety of techniques for turning the floats and every turn is dramatic and exciting. The riders on the floats jerk and sway as the floats are turned and the crowd always cheers after the turn is completed. Because of this, the largest crowds tend to be at the intersections, especially in front of the Shiga Prefectural Government building and NHK Hall. Local residents typically open their 2nd floor windows and drape red blankets over the window sills and they have tea parties and enjoy the parade from above. This gives the area a really festive vibe.
