ビンテージレコードとブートレグ
みなさんこんにちは、マーティンです！
6月と７月は関西に住む私の１年の中でも大好きな月です。季節だけでなく、私の家とスミス英会話甲東園校のある西宮から電車ですぐの場所、大阪梅田で２つの大きなレコードフェアがあるからです。阪神百貨店8階ではレコード＆CDフェス、大阪メトロ中崎町駅からすぐの梅田アクトスリーホールの2階ではレコードフェスタが年に2回開催され、私が楽しみにしているイベントです。私のようなビンテージレコードのコレクターにとっては宝探しです。
日本レコードの黄金時代
1968年～1974年、日本では世界最高水準のレコードが製造されていました。他の国で公式のリリースが急ぎ足だった中、日本の製造業者は非常に丁寧で、厚みのあるレコード、厳しい品質コントロール、より良い材質、そしてそのマスタリングの精度は音楽をより深く豊かな音にしてくれます。この時代に日本で作られたクラシックロックのアルバムレコードは現在世界でも需要が高く入手困難です。他のリリース時には含まれていなかった多くのアートワークが追加されました。
さらに面白いのが、同じ頃日本では－ライブ録音、未発表のスタジオ収録、貴重なセッションやさらにはリマスターを含む「ブートレグ」が生産されました。そしてこれらのブートレグも品質には強いこだわりを持ち製造されています。現在、これらのブートレグは貴重だというだけでなく、製造段階の徹底的なこだわりが収集価値を高くしています。
レコードとスミス英会話
私は毎回こういったレコードフェスでレコードに目を通していると、何が手元に残す価値があるかを考えます。それは“これで十分”という程度のレコードでは決してありません。価値のあるものは、いつでも細部まで深くこだわったもの―求められたからという理由ではなく、音楽にとっても完成したレコードにとっても重要なことだから作り手はさらなる努力をするのです。

Vintage Records, Bootlegs, and Why I Love the Smith’s Team
Hi everyone, it’s Martin!
June and July are my favourite months in the Kansai calendar — and not just for the weather. Two major record fairs are happening in Osaka Umeda, just a short train ride from where I live and where our school is in Nishinomiya. The Hanshin Department Store Record & CD Festa on the 8th floor and the record fair at ACT III on the 2nd floor in Nakazakicho are events I look forward to every half year. For a vintage record collector like me, they are pure treasure hunts.
Japan and the Golden Era of Vinyl
Between 1968 and 1974, Japan produced some of the finest vinyl pressings in the world. While official releases in other countries were often rushed, Japanese manufacturers applied extraordinary care — thicker vinyl, tighter quality control, better materials and a mastering precision that made the music sound deeper and richer. Classic rock albums pressed in Japan during that era are among the most sought-after in the world today. Lots of additional art works were added that did not appear in releases elsewhere.
But here’s where it gets really interesting. During that same period, Japan also produced bootleg recordings — live concerts, studio outtakes, rare sessions, and even remasters — and these bootlegs were crafted with the same obsessive attention to quality. Today they are highly collectible, not just for their rarity, but for the sheer care that went into making them.
What Records Have to Do With Smith’s
Every time I flip through a crate at one of these fairs, I think about what makes something truly worth keeping. It’s never the ones that were just good enough. It’s always the ones where someone cared deeply about the details — where extra effort went in, not because it was required, but because it mattered to the people making it, both the music and the final product.
That’s exactly what I find in the Smith’s team. The teachers here don’t just show up and run a lesson. They think about their students between sessions, they notice small breakthroughs, they celebrate progress that no test would ever measure. When a student finally nails a phrase they’ve been wrestling with, or walks into class beaming because they had their first real conversation in English — those moments matter to us. Deeply. We talk about our students, we root for them, and we genuinely care how their journeys unfold. That sense of shared purpose — encouraging each other, learning from each other, building something together — is what makes coming to work feel less like a job and more like being part of something meaningful.
That kind of quiet dedication — the kind that doesn’t advertise itself — is what makes Smith’s something I’m genuinely proud to be part of every single day.
