「What is a danjiri? Why is the float lifted? What does neri mean?」
The Day the Festival Came to Our Door

On April 18, 2026, I was getting ready for class when the sound of taiko drums told me something special was happening right outside. The Kami-Ōichi Hachiman-Jinja Taikodai Fukkō 10th Anniversary celebration parade had gathered in front of our Smith's Kōtōen school, and it was about to set off.
A Decade of Restoration
The star of the day was the Ōichi Taiko-dai, the ceremonial drum float of Kami-Ōichi, marking ten years since its restoration. Three other units joined it: the Wakaebisu-kai Danjiri from Nishinomiya Shrine, the Narai Danjiri, and the Wakafuku-kai Funadanjiri, a boat-style float. Four units in all, each with its own community behind it.
Right on Our Doorstep
A student and I stepped outside together to watch. Neither of us had to travel anywhere, because the parade was assembling in front of the school. I love moments like this in Japan: a festival is not something you watch on television, it simply arrives on your street, and you can step out of your front door and be part of it.

From there, the procession made its way to Hankyu Kōtōen Station, where the crowd gathered for public performances and demonstrations, including traditional neri and the lifting of the floats. It then continued through Hinokuchi and on to its destination, Ōichi Hachiman Shrine

Learning Beyond the Textbook
Standing there with my student, the lesson wrote itself. What is a danjiri? Why is the float lifted? What does neri mean? Explaining these things in English, to someone who may know far more about them than I do, is one of the reasons I love teaching. Real conversation grows out of real life, and my student and I were both learning from the same moment.
That is also what I love about being part of Smith's. We are small enough that a teacher and a student can walk outside together in the middle of the day and share something like this. The school is part of the neighborhood, and the neighborhood is part of our lessons.
Come and Join Us
If you live in Kōtōen, Nishinomiya, or nearby, you probably have your own festival memories. I would love to hear them, in English. Come and visit Smith's School of English Kōtōen, and let's talk about the place we call home.
