私は2000年から兵庫県西宮市に住んでいて、日本についていつも感心させられるのは将来に対する地域社会の投資です。現在、スミス英会話甲東園校から遠くない場所でそれが顕著にわかる場所があります。新しく西宮にできる素晴らしい病院、兵庫県立西宮総合医療センターです。
この新しい兵庫県立西宮総合医療センターは、国道2号線と阪急電鉄の阪神国道駅に面しており、素晴らしいロケーションです。1年半の間、私は11階建てのこの巨大な建物が西宮の街並みを作っていく風景を見ていて、毎日通り過ぎながら妻のヨウコと私はこの街をホームと呼べることを誇りに思っています。
これは兵庫県と西宮市が連携した計画です。そしてこの医療センターは35の診療科と552床の病床が入る総合病院です。阪神圏域に救急救命と高度急性期医療を提供し、屋上にはヘリポート整備、救急車と救急救命士が常駐する救急ワークステーションが開設、そして大きな地震にも耐える免震構造設計です。2026年7月1日に開院の予定です。
私は頻繁に甲東園校の生徒様に、日本がいかに人々が長く健康で幸福でいられることを真剣に捉えているのを見られることがここに住む喜びのひとつだと話します。この病院はその完璧な例です。県と市が何年も慎重に計画し、将来何世代にも渡って地域に提供するものを建設しているのです。こういった精神-思慮深く、断固とした意志を、静かながら堅実に実行する姿勢こそが、私が30年近く経った今もここに住み続ける理由のひとつで、毎日楽しんでいます。

Introduction To Hyogo Prefectural Nishinomiya General Medical Center兵庫県立西宮総合医療センター

I have lived in Nishinomiya since 2000, and one of the things that has always impressed me about Japan is how communities invest in their future. Right now, something remarkable is happening a short distance from The Smith's School of English in Kōtōen. It's Nishinomiya’s Amazing New Hospital.
The brand-new Hyogo Prefectural Nishinomiya General Medical Center — 兵庫県立西宮総合医療センター is rising up beside National Route 2 and Hanshin Kokudo station, and it is an impressive sight. For a year and a half, I have watched this enormous, 11-storey building take shape against the Nishinomiya skyline, and every day we pass it, my wife Yoko and I feel a quiet sense of pride in this city we call home.
This is the result of a collaboration between Hyogo Prefecture and Nishinomiya City. The facility is a comprehensive medical centre with 35 departments and 552 beds. It will serve as a core emergency and advanced acute care hospital for the entire Hanshin region, with a rooftop helipad, an on-site emergency workstation where ambulances and paramedics will be stationed around the clock, and a seismic isolation structure built to withstand major earthquakes. Opening day is set for July 1, 2026.
I often communicate with students that one of the great joys of living here is watching how seriously Japan takes the long-term well-being of its people. This hospital is a perfect example of that. Prefecture and city planned carefully over many years, and built something that will serve this community for generations to come. That spirit — thoughtful, determined, quietly excellent — is one of the reasons I am still here after nearly 30 years, and still loving every day of it.
