私は生徒様の年代の幅広さも好きです。一日の中で、中学生の生徒様に英語に慣れてもらうレッスンをして、高校生の生徒様に試験対策のレッスン、そしてもっと自然に話したい大学生の生徒様のレッスンをすることもあります。それぞれが別の学校に通っていて、それぞれの学校の行事がレッスンにも混ざります。春には、新学年始めの新しい制服を見て、冬のテスト期間はいつもとは違う集中力になります。生徒様のこういった変化は見ていて飽きることがありません。

つながりを感じる場所

こういった場所に住むことで私自身も変化がありました。甲東園の近隣地域はつながりを感じます。学生は学校へ歩いて一緒に登校し、その家族はお互いを知っていて、学校の評判はコミュニティ全体が誇りを持っているものです。日本に住み３０年、この居場所があるという感覚は日常生活を心地いいものにしてくれます。

There are many famous schools in Nishinomiya Kōtōen, and I want to share some of my experiences working as an English teacher here.

Quiet Determination

What I love most is the way students in Japan approach their studies. They arrive after a full day at school with their uniforms, school bags, and a quiet determination that never stops impressing me. Nobody makes a fuss about it. They simply show up, listen carefully, and try again when a sentence doesn't come out right. That patience and persistence is a big part of what makes teaching in Japan such a pleasure.

Every Age, Every Season

I also love the range of people. In one day I might teach a junior high student getting comfortable with spoken English, a high school student preparing for an exam, and a university student who wants to sound more natural. Each of them belongs to a school community with its own traditions, and each brings a little of it into the lesson. In spring, I see the new uniforms on the first days of the school year, and in winter exam season brings a different kind of focus. Watching students move through those rhythms is something I never tire of.

A Place That Feels Connected

Living in a place like this has changed me, too. Neighbourhoods here feel connected. Students walk to and from school together, families know one another, and a school's reputation is something the whole community takes pride in. After thirty years in Japan, that sense of belonging is still one of the most welcoming things about daily life.

For me, that's Japan at its best: a culture that values education, effort, and respect for others, all visible on an ordinary afternoon in Kōtōen. It's a privilege to play a small part in it.

A Neighbourhood of Well-Known Schools

Our Smith's School of English branch in Kōtōen is surrounded by some of the best-known schools in the area. Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU), Kangaku High School and Junior High School, Nigawa Gakuin, Kenritsu Nishinomiya High School, Hotoku Gakuen Boys High School, and Koryo Municipal Junior High School and others are integral to the local landscape. Students from every one of them come to my classroom, and I've been glad to welcome them since I opened in 2003.
