桜とお花見

お花見シーズンが英語を教える一番好きな季節：

春になると、空気が変わります。道や堤防に並ぶ桜の木は満開に咲き誇り、短い間ですがその美しさに街全体の時間がゆっくりになります。

私は1996年から日本に住んでいますが、この瞬間が毎年楽しみです。お花見―伝統的に桜の木の下に集まり、食事をして、ただそこにいる―には、純粋に心を動かされる何かがあります。日本では、桜はただ春の始まりを指すものというだけではありません。すべての始まりを指しています：学校の新学期、新社会人、新しい生活。それは人々に暖かさと重みを与えるもので、私にとって尽きることのない興味です。

会話が弾む季節

Why hanami is one of my favourite times to teach :

Every spring, something changes in the air. The cherry trees along the streets and riverbanks burst into bloom, and for a brief, beautiful time, the whole city slows down to notice.

I have been living in Japan since 1996, and I still look forward to this moment every year. There is something about hanami — the tradition of gathering beneath the blossoms, sharing food, and simply being present — that I find genuinely moving. In Japan, the cherry blossoms don’t just indicate the start of spring. They mark the start of everything: new school years, new jobs, new life chapters. That gives them a warmth and a weight that I find endlessly interesting to talk about.

When a student tries to explain hanami in English — really explain it, from scratch — something interesting happens. They reach for words like fleeting, bittersweet, linger, abundance. Words you won’t find in a grammar exercise, but that come naturally when the feeling is real. That reaching is where the learning takes place.
