空いてる時間の趣味

音楽を聴くのが好きな人がいます、それを集めるのが好きな人もいます。私はその両方に属しています―1972年、10歳の時からです。小学校6年生でレコード店に行きバンドディープパープルの新しいアルバム「マシンヘッド」を買って帰りました。
それは終わることのない何かの始まりでした。そこから長い月日をかけて、アナログレコードだけではなくCDやデジタルダウンロードも含めコレクションは増えていきました。聴くジャンルも広がりましたが―いつでも私の心は1970年代のブリティッシュロックにあります。ピンクフロイド、クイーン、イエス、キングクリムゾン、ジェネシス、レッドツェッペリン、エマーソン・レイク＆パーマー、ジェントルジャイアント、キャメル、ムーディーブルース、ブラックサバス、ジューダスプリースト、モーターヘッド。イギリスのミュージシャンたちが新しい音楽を生み出し、成功し続けた桁外れの時代です。

日本のレコード

日本に住む喜びとはレコードコレクターにとってどういうことか。日本は世界中のオーディオ愛好家の間では長く、相応しい高い評価を得てきました。

その理由はいくつかあります：

・日本のレコードのプレス技術が一番高い。1960年後半から1985年にかけて、日本のレコード製造業者はビニールレコードのプレスを非常に高精度で行っていました―ノイズが少ない盤面、品質管理が厳格、細部へのこだわりが別格。クラシックアルバムでは日本のプレス技術が世界中でもっとも需要があります。

・日本の中古レコード文化は優れている。ヴィンテージ品に対して敬意を持ち整然と扱っています。

・いつも価格に驚かされる。

少し前、大阪でざっと見ていたら、日本プレスで素晴らしい状態のマシンヘッドの中古レコードを見つけました―何年も前のカナダで、私のすべての原点になったそのアルバムです―価格は安すぎるほどでした。よく見てみると、1977年に再発されたアルバムで当時の帯、翻訳された歌詞シート、バンドメンバーの写真、そして日本のプレス技術がついてきます。レコードとジャケットは完璧な状態で、コレクターの間では“Near Mint（ほぼ新品）”と呼ばれます。価格をもう一度見直すなんてしません。こういう瞬間が日本に住む小さな喜びの一部です。

Spare Time for Hobbys I Love

There are people who listen to music, and there are people who collect it. I am firmly in both camps — and have been since age ten, when in 1972, a 6th Grader walked into a record shop in Canada and came home with the then brand new release of Deep Purple Machine Head. That was the beginning of something that never stopped. Over decades, the collection has grown to include not just vinyl LPs but CDs and digital downloads as well, spanning various genres — though my heart belongs above all to British rock of the 1970s. Pink Floyd. Queen. Yes. King Crimson. Genesis. Led Zeppelin. Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Gentle Giant. Camel. Moody Blues. Black Sabbath. Judas Priest. Motorhead. That was the extraordinary decade when British musicians aimed for something genuinely new, and often succeeded.

Japan and the World of Vinyl

A genuine pleasure of living in Japan is what it means for a record collector. Japan has a long and well-deserved reputation among audiophiles worldwide for several reasons:

∙ Japanese pressings are among the finest ever made. From the late 1960s through to 1985, Japanese record manufacturers pressed vinyl to extraordinarily high standards — quieter surfaces, tighter quality control, and exceptional attention to detail. A Japanese pressing of a classic album is often the most sought-after in the world.

∙ The used record culture here is remarkable. Japan’s approach to vintage goods is respectful and organised.

∙ Prices can always surprise you.

Not long ago, browsing in Osaka, I found a gorgeous vintage Japanese pressing of Machine Head — the very album that started it for me, all those years ago in Canada — at a price that seemed far too low. On careful inspection, I find a 1977 reissue that comes with its original obi, a translated lyric sheet, and photos of the band members, extra items that Japanese pressings typically came with. Vinyl and jacket are tip top, what collectors call Near Mint. I would not dare reconsider the price tag. Moments like that are among the quiet joys of living in Japan.

Life in Japan with Room for Things You Love
