When I first started teaching at Smith's School of English twenty years ago, I was delighted to discover that one of Japan's most charming cable cars was just a five-minute walk from our school. The Ikoma cable car became one of those wonderful surprises that made me fall even more in love with this special city.

The Ikoma cable car has been faithfully carrying passengers up Mount Ikoma for over 100 years, making it one of the oldest cable cars in all of Japan. This isn't just transportation – it's a journey through time, connecting generations of families to the mountain-top amusement park and the natural beauty that surrounds our English conversation community in Ikoma.

What strikes first-time riders immediately is the cable car's unique slanted design. When you sit down, everything feels normal, but stand up and walk down the aisle – suddenly you're walking uphill or downhill at the same angle as the mountain slope! It's a delightful surprise that never gets old, even after two decades of living here. The real magic, though, lies in the themed cars themselves. Each car has its own personality with names like "Bull," "Mike," "Sweet," and "Do-re-mi." Children's faces light up when they discover which themed car they'll be riding, adding an amusement park atmosphere to the journey before they even reach the top.

The cable car operates in two sections, each with its own pair of cars. As you ascend, the views become increasingly spectacular.
