まるかつのとんかつは外はサクサク、中はジューシーで、私はいつもとんかつソースと一緒にからしをつけて食べます。また、まるかつにはとても面白いご飯があります。たいていのとんかつ屋は、普通の白いご飯です。ここでもそうですが、五穀を炊き込んだ紫色の五穀米を選ぶこともできます。日本版の全粒粉パンですね、私は大好きです。

このレストランはスミス英会話生駒校から車で5分のところにあります。ユニクロやお店が並ぶエリアにあり、くら寿司のすぐ近くなので見逃すことはありませんし、駐車場もあります(駐車料金は無料です！)。レストランは入りやすい雰囲気で、壁にはたくさんのおもしろい “格言”が貼られており、例えば「人には好きなことを言わせておけ。お前の道を進め。」など。まるかつでは食前にリンゴ酢の食前酢が提供されますが大好きなので、いつもいただきます。

まるかつのメニューには、とんかつや揚げ物の面白いバリエーションがあります。例えば、サツマイモのコロッケとか、アスパラと明太子とチーズのカツとか。これは本当に面白そうですね。

Marukatsu, Ikoma’s best tonkatsu is just a five minute drive from Smith’s school of English in Ikoma. Let me tell you about Marukatsu. My wife first discovered it and took me there for lunch, maybe two years ago. My favourite dish is the rosu katsu, which is a thickly sliced pork cutlet that has been coated in batter and breadcrumbs and deep fried.

They always serve it crispy on the outside, and juicy inside, and I always put some hot karashi mustard with the tonkatsu sauce on it. They also have a very interesting rice dish. Most Tonkatsu restaurants just serve plain white rice. You can get that here as well, but you also have a choice to get rice with five other grains cooked in, and it has a purplish colour. It is the Japanese version of whole grain bread, and I love it.

The restaurant is just a five minute drive from my Smith’s School of English in Ikoma. It’s in a strip mall right beside the Uniqlo not far from the Kura Sushi restaurant so you really can’t miss it, and there is always parking available (free parking!). It has a nice friendly atmosphere and the walls are covered in interesting life inspiring quotes such as “Let other people say whatever they say. Do what you do”. Everytime I have gone there was a taster of some apple cider vinegar available and I love that drink so I always get some.

The menu has a delightful variety of interesting variations on tonkatsu and related foods. For instance you can get sweet potato croquettes, or asparagus and mentaiko and cheese katsu. This one sounds really interesting to me.

I sometimes talk about food in my class, or cooking. Tonkatsu is one of the foods that I like to bring up because it is easy enough for a beginner to make, but only an expert can truly make a masterpiece tonkatsu. Also many of my students love to talk about cooking or their favourite restaurants in class.
