Sagamihara Smith’s School of English Trial Student Expected Something Else

A Sagamihara Smith’s School of English student recently started talking about the trial lesson she received from me about 4 years ago. She was laughing a bit and said that the trial lesson was completely different than she expected. She told me that she imagined walking into the classroom and seeing a happy young English teacher  introducing himself, trying to convince her that he was a good English teacher, and that Smith’s School of English was the best English school to join in Sagamihara City. Instead she got “hello, my name is Jim.”

This Sagamihara student of English is every English teacher’s dream student! Now a regular student of four years at Smith’s School of English Sagamihara, she has become an advanced English speaker. Her English skills are so good now that she was able to explain what she expected in that trial lesson with a lot of humor!

Recognizing quickly that she was a beginner, I chose something very easy and meaningful in everyone’s life. “What do you do every day?” From the moment you open your eyes in the morning until you walk out the door on your way to work is what we built a conversation around. There was nothing difficult about it at all, and by the end of the trial lesson she was speaking English at length-  much more than me. This is just one example of what gives me satisfaction in teaching English in Sagamihara Japan.

Maybe she was laughing at that English lesson because it is now so simple for her. That’s part of it, but she was really joking about it because she expected a young, smiley man dressed in a suit attempting to sell her something. She expected “hello, my name is Jim; welcome to Smith’s School of English Sagamihara. I will be your English teacher today. Let’s enjoy speaking English together!”  Instead, she got me- an older man dressed in blue jeans, a casual shirt, and a lesson that had her speaking English in just a few minutes.

After she was done joking about that trial lesson, I asked her to tell me about her daily routine, just to make sure that she remembered, and to try and prove a point. She spoke non-stop for about 10 minutes about her entire daily routine with lots of detail-  from opening her eyes in the morning to what she does while working at Sagamihara City Office, to catching the bus home, to closing her eyes at night. I smiled, said “thank you, your English is fantastic.” I’m very  impressed and proud of this English student.
